Catastrophic health expenditure in sub-Saharan Africa: systematic review and meta-analysis

Paul Eze et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the incidence and trends of catastrophic health expenditure in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that a significant proportion of households in sub-Saharan Africa experienced catastrophic expenditure when accessing healthcare services, with countries in central and southern regions having the highest and lowest incidence rates, respectively. The incidence of catastrophic health expenditure increased between 2010 and 2020, and individuals with specific diseases had a higher risk. The study highlights the need for stronger financial protection measures.

Comparative health systems analysis of differences in the catastrophic health expenditure associated with non-communicable vs communicable diseases among adults in six countries

Annie Haakenstad et al.

Summary: The burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income countries has implications for the financial risk protection provided by health systems. This study compares the impact of NCDs on catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) with communicable diseases (CDs) across different health systems. The findings suggest that NCDs disproportionately affect wealthier households and have different drivers compared to CDs. Health system attributes play a crucial role in translating disease burden into CHE.

Toward universal health coverage in the post-COVID-19 era

Stephane Verguet et al.

Summary: All countries worldwide have signed up to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and committed to the objective of achieving universal health coverage. Getting there will require understanding how packages of essential health services can be developed in resource-constrained settings and how experts and the public can make decisions about which health services should be provided free of charge.
