Ultra-processed food consumption in adults across Europe

Elly Mertens et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the consumption of ultra-processed food and drinks (UPFDs) in adults across Europe and investigate their associations with total sugar intake, dietary fiber intake, and high BMI. Results showed significant variation in UPFDs consumption across European countries, with no observed association between UPFDs consumption and country-level burden of high BMI, despite a correlation with higher total sugar intake.

Association between Adherence to Swedish Dietary Guidelines and Mediterranean Diet and Risk of Stroke in a Swedish Population

Esther Gonzalez-Padilla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns and the incidence of stroke. The results suggest that a high-quality diet in line with the current Swedish dietary recommendations or the Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of total and ischemic stroke.

Nutritional Components in Western Diet Versus Mediterranean Diet at the Gut Microbiota-Immune System Interplay. Implications for Health and Disease

Cielo Garcia-Montero et al.

Summary: The most prevalent non-communicable diseases of our time, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer, are on the rise globally due to inflammatory disorders, impaired immune functions and alterations in gut microbiota. Nutrition plays a crucial role in modulating the interaction between immune system and microbiota, with Westernized diet negatively impacting both, while Mediterranean diet positively influences them. Precision nutrition is emerging as a new approach for the treatment and prevention of these diseases.

Is resistin the master link between inflammation and inflammation-related chronic diseases?

Mohammed Taouis et al.

Summary: Resistin was initially discovered in mice and was found to be related to obesity and insulin resistance as a hormone secreted by adipose tissue. In humans, Resistin is expressed by immune cells, especially macrophages, and is associated with inflammatory responses. Although in mice there is evidence linking Resistin to obesity and insulin resistance, in humans the association is still debated and requires more epidemiological studies. Resistin has also been linked to other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancers and has been considered as a biological marker in many studies.
