Prevalence and the associated factors of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral infections among HIV-positive individuals in same-day antiretroviral therapy initiation program in Bangkok, Thailand

Supanat Thitipatarakorn et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of hepatitis B and C viral infections among HIV patients in Bangkok, Thailand, and analyzed the associated factors. The study found that approximately 5-10% of newly diagnosed HIV patients in Bangkok had hepatitis B viral infection after 25 years of universal vaccination. Anti-HCV positivity was found in 4-5% of HIV patients who were men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW).

Chemsex and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among Canadian pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users in the l'Actuel PrEP Cohort (2013-2020)

Jorge Luis Flores Anato et al.

Summary: This study found that engaging in chemsex increases the incidence of gonorrhea and chlamydia among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) and transgender women using PrEP. The effect is even stronger for individuals who report using multiple substances during chemsex. This highlights the importance of PrEP for this population and the need for integrated services to address the complexities of sexualized substance use.

Low incidence and prevalence of hepatitis C in two cohorts of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis adherence interventions in men who have sex with men in Southern California

Adiba Hassan et al.

Summary: HCV infection rates are low among MSM and transgender women using PrEP in Southern California. Older age and lower education level are associated with HCV seropositivity. HCV-positive participants did not report any cases of sexually transmitted infections at entry, while HCV-negative participants had a higher prevalence.

Prevalence and incidence of hepatitis C infection amongst men who have sex with men in a population-based pre-exposure prophylaxis program in British Columbia, Canada

Kyle A. Thompson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and incidence of HCV among MSM receiving PrEP in British Columbia, Canada. The results showed that the baseline HCV prevalence and incidence were low among MSM in the population-based PrEP program. HCV was associated with having a partner living with HIV and a history of prior STI.

Brain Sex in Transgender Women Is Shifted towards Gender Identity

Florian Kurth et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between brain structure and physiological sex as well as gender identity in transgender individuals. The results showed that the brain structure of transgender women fell between cisgender men and cisgender women, but was closer to cisgender men. These findings support the idea that the underlying brain anatomy in transgender individuals is more aligned with their gender identity.

Multiplexed technologies for sexually transmitted infections: global evidence on patient-centered and clinical health outcomes

Faheel Naeem et al.

Summary: Compared with conventional lab-based testing, rapid multiplexed technologies were preferred by testees and led to quicker turnaround times for many STIs, yielding same-day results, thereby allowing for rapid linkages to care. They were further shown to be highly feasible and impactful for detection and treatment facilitation, offering potential to screen at-risk populations to reduce onward STI transmission worldwide.

Global phylogeny of Treponema pallidum lineages reveals recent expansion and spread of contemporary syphilis

Mathew A. Beale et al.

Summary: Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum, is increasing globally, with two main lineages, Nichols and SS14, circulating in multiple countries. Expansion and international transmission of sublineages have been observed, as well as potential resistance to macrolides in contemporary syphilis lineages. A population bottleneck followed by rapid expansion in the 2000s has been traced through Bayesian temporal analysis of 726 global genome samples.

HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B prevalence, related risk behaviours and correlates of condom use among transgender women in two cities in Sri Lanka: findings from respondent-driven sampling surveys

Jelena Barbaric et al.

Summary: HIV prevalence is low among TGW in Colombo, with no infections in Jaffna, but syphilis positivity is higher in Colombo. Both cities have low comprehensive knowledge about HIV prevention among TGW, with a higher condom use rate in Colombo. Risk behaviours differ between the cities, emphasizing the need to strengthen responses to TGW-specific needs.
