Spatial analysis of socio-economic factors and their relationship with the cases of COVID-19 in Pernambuco, Brazil

Carlos Fabricio Assuncao da Silva et al.

Summary: Our study analyzed the spatial distribution of COVID-19 cases and its association with socio-economic conditions in Pernambuco, Brazil. Using autocorrelation and spatial association models, we found two isolated clusters in sparsely inhabited municipalities. The Geographically Weighted Regression model was able to explain 50% of the variations in COVID-19 cases, with variables such as low income, rented homes, social program families, Gini index, and running water having the greatest explanatory power. These results can provide important information for decision-making in similar circumstances.

Coresidence increases the risk of testing positive for COVID-19 among older Brazilians

Flavia Cristina Drumond Andrade et al.

Summary: The study finds that living arrangements affect older adults' susceptibility to COVID-19 exposure and testing. Those living alone are more likely to report symptoms and undergo COVID-19 testing. However, older adults in multigenerational and skipped generation households are more likely to test positive for COVID-19 than solo-dwellers. Older adults with symptoms are more likely to get tested, regardless of their living arrangements. Among older adults without symptoms, those living alone have a higher probability of being tested compared to those living in multigenerational or skipped-generation households.

Population-wide active case finding and prevention for tuberculosis and leprosy elimination in Kiribati: the PEARL study protocol

Mikaela Coleman et al.

Summary: This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of population-wide screening, treatment, and prevention interventions for tuberculosis (TB) and leprosy. The study is conducted in a high-burden setting in Kiribati and involves non-randomized 'screen-and-treat' interventions. The primary outcomes include the difference in TB and leprosy case notification rates before and after the intervention, as well as the impact on TB transmission measured through the estimated annual risk of TB infection in primary school children. The study findings will be disseminated through publications, conferences, and community engagement.

Effect of socioeconomic inequalities and vulnerabilities on health-system preparedness and response to COVID-19 in Brazil: a comprehensive analysis

Rudi Rocha et al.

Summary: This study in Brazil found that socioeconomic vulnerability, rather than age or health status, significantly impacted the course of the COVID-19 epidemic. Government responses and population behaviors in areas with higher socioeconomic vulnerability played a crucial role in containing the effects of the epidemic. Targeted policies and actions are necessary to protect those with the greatest socioeconomic vulnerability, and this experience may be applicable to other low- and middle-income countries with varying levels of socioeconomic vulnerability.
