Associations Between Findings of Fusobacterium necrophorum or β-Hemolytic Streptococci and Complications in Pharyngotonsillitis-A Registry-Based Study in Southern Sweden

David Nygren et al.

Summary: In patients with pharyngotonsillitis, the presence of F. necrophorum or group A streptococci is associated with higher complication rates, while the presence of group C/G streptococci is associated with fewer complications.

Best management of patients with an acute sore throat - a critical analysis of current evidence and a consensus of experts from different countries and traditions

Ronny K. Gunnarsson et al.

Summary: Experts from different countries have reached a consensus on the management of patients with acute sore throat by introducing a new triage scheme that considers both short-term and long-term risks. The article also explores the emerging trend of nurses and pharmacists independently managing these patients and the need for safety netting in such practice.

High prevalence of pharyngeal bacterial pathogens among healthy adolescents and young adults

Martin Agerhall et al.

Summary: A study assessed the prevalence of bacterial pharyngeal pathogens in 217 healthy adolescents and young adults using culturing techniques and PCR. Results showed higher detection rates with PCR for GAS and F. necrophorum compared to culturing, although often with low DNA levels. At least one pathogen was detected in 25.3% of the healthy individuals, indicating a high incidence of asymptomatic carriage among this population.

Microbiology of parapharyngeal abscesses in adults: in search of the significant pathogens

Tejs Ehlers Klug et al.

Summary: The study found that unspecified anaerobes, non-hemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus anginosus group, and Fusobacterium necrophorum were abundant in parapharyngeal abscess patients. Streptococcus anginosus group, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Prevotella, and Streptococcus pyogenes were identified as significant pathogens in PPA development.

Geographical differences in tonsillar carriage rates of Fusobacterium necrophorum- A cross-sectional study in Sweden and Zambia

David Nygren et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown transient carriage of Fusobacterium necrophorum in adolescence and young adulthood in Europe and the US, but data from Africa is lacking. This study found a high tonsillar carriage rate of F. necrophorum in Swedish participants aged 15-25 years compared to Zambian participants, with rare tonsillar carriage in Zambian participants above 25 years old.
