Socio-economic segregation in European cities. A comparative study of Brussels, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Oslo and Stockholm

Karen Haandrikman et al.

Summary: This study compares socioeconomic segregation patterns and levels in Brussels, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Oslo, and Stockholm, and finds that the segregation of the rich is stronger than the segregation of the poor in all cities. Macro-scale poverty segregation is most prominent in Stockholm and Brussels, while macro-scale affluence segregation is most pronounced in Oslo. At micro-scales, Brussels and Stockholm stand out with very high local poverty concentrations, indicating high levels of polarization.

Fifteen years with patient choice and free establishment in Swedish primary healthcare: what do we know?

Mio Fredriksson et al.

Summary: This article reviews the primary healthcare choice reform in Sweden and summarizes its first 15 years based on published research articles. The findings indicate that the reform has increased access to primary healthcare, but the distribution of this increased access is inequitable socioeconomically and geographically. The impact on quality is unclear, but several studies suggest that the mechanisms intended to improve quality are not functioning as intended. It is suggested that it is time to discuss how such responsibility can be reintegrated into primary healthcare from a population health perspective.

Individual and Area-level Factors Contributing to the Geographic Variation in Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions in Finland A Register-based Study

Markku Satokangas et al.

Summary: The research shows that in addition to individual factors, area disease burden and hospital care arrangements contribute to the geographic variation in ACSCs. This calls for caution when comparing PHC performance in different areas. Additionally, disease burden, hospital supply, and spatial access also have an impact on the geographic variation in ACSCs.

What could prevent chronic condition admissions assessed as preventable in rural and metropolitan contexts? An analysis of clinicians' perspectives from the DaPPHne study

Jo Longman et al.

Summary: This study explores the factors contributing to preventable hospital admissions for angina, diabetes, CHF, and COPD, as perceived by clinicians. The findings suggest that individual admissions are complex and context-specific, and a comprehensive approach addressing multiple factors is needed to reduce potentially preventable hospitalizations.
