Expanded catalogue of metagenome-assembled genomes reveals resistome characteristics and athletic performance-associated microbes in horse

Cunyuan Li et al.

Summary: By metagenomic sequencing of gut samples from 242 horses, researchers identified 4142 microbial metagenome-assembled genomes (MAG), with 96.93% being new species. High abundance and diversity of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) were found, indicating widespread use of antibiotics in horse management. Racehorses had higher abundances of certain MAG enriched in acetate and butyrate production pathways, suggesting potential for enhanced athletic performance.

KEGG for taxonomy-based analysis of pathways and genomes

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a manually curated database resource that integrates various biological objects classified into systems, genomic, chemical, and health information. Through the KEGG identifier and URL links, users can retrieve and browse information for different biological objects, including pathway maps, hierarchy, and genomes. KEGG has also improved KO assignment annotation and included more eukaryotic genomes for better representation of organisms in the taxonomic tree. The taxonomy mapping enables analysis of the conservation of functional and physical links among genes in different organism groups.

Integrated multi-omics reveals novel microbe-host lipid metabolism and immune interactions in the donkey hindgut

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study explored the differences in gut microbiome and differentially expressed genes related to lipid metabolism and the immune system in the donkey hindgut. The study found significant differences in dominant bacteria among different sections of the hindgut, particularly between the cecum and dorsal colon sites. It also identified interesting DEGs related to lipid metabolism and the immune system, with the PPAR pathway being mainly enriched in the cecum. Furthermore, the study revealed a complex relationship between the gut microbiome and gene expression, especially in relation to the immune system.

Comparative Analysis of Microbiome Metagenomics in Reintroduced Wild Horses and Resident Asiatic Wild Asses in the Gobi Desert Steppe

Liping Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, the gut microbiome of translocated and resident wild equids were compared using metagenomic shotgun sequencing. The results showed a significant difference in microbiome composition between the two groups, but a convergence in the functional profile. Wild asses had a higher abundance of beneficial microbes and genes related to metabolism and enzymes, which may contribute to their diverse diet choices and larger home ranges.

Comparison of gut microflora of donkeys in high and low altitude areas

Rong Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gut microbiota of donkeys from the Tibetan Plateau and found that the diversity and richness of the microbiota were higher in Tibetan Plateau donkeys compared to Dezhou donkeys. The major pathways associated with the Tibetan Plateau donkeys were signal transduction mechanisms and carbohydrate transport and metabolism.
