Analysis of the complete mitogenome of Daphnia galeata from the Han River, South Korea: structure comparison and control region evolution

Tae-June Choi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed Daphnia galeata samples from the Han River in Korea and found that they belong to the D clade, which is specific to South Korea. The structure and sequence of the mitochondrial control region of these samples were similar to those from Japanese populations and different from European populations. Furthermore, a phylogenetic analysis showed that D. galeata from the Han River clustered with samples from Lakes Kasumigaura, Shirakaba, and Kizaki in Japan.

Phenotypic plasticity and developmental noise in hybrid and parental clones of Daphnia longispina complex

Piotr Bernatowicz et al.

Summary: The temporal hybrid superiority hypothesis suggests that seasonal variability in temperate lakes provides hybrid clones with a temporary fitness advantage, leading to their long-term coexistence with maternal taxa. The average fitness of hybrids surpassing that of parental clones over longer periods could also maintain their presence. Phenotypic plasticity and developmental noise were compared among hybrid and maternal clones in response to various stress factors. Hybrid clones exhibited the broadest phenotypic plasticity, suggesting their ability to adapt to different environmental conditions.

Genomic regions associated with adaptation to predation in Daphnia often include members of expanded gene families

Xiuping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Daphnia mitsukuri responds to predation risk by regulating multiple gene families associated with chemoreception and vision, allowing for enhanced detection and response to predation risk. The expansion of gene families related to detoxification and cuticle formation also enables Daphnia to efficiently mount a defense against perceived predation risk. These findings contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind prey defenses, important for evolutionary adaptations and community dynamics.
