Low-dose aspirin use in pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth: a Swedish register-based cohort study

Ellen Kupka et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between low-dose aspirin use and preterm birth among women with a previous preterm birth. A Swedish register-based cohort study found that low-dose aspirin use was associated with a reduced risk of preterm birth, particularly in spontaneous preterm births.

Pre-eclampsia screening in Denmark (PRESIDE): national validation study

I. Riishede et al.

Summary: This study investigates the predictive performance of the FMF first-trimester screening algorithm for pre-eclampsia in a Danish population and compares it with the current Danish strategy based on maternal risk factors. The results show that the FMF algorithm performs well in predicting pre-eclampsia and its performance in the Danish population is similar to other populations.

Performance of first-trimester combined screening for preterm pre-eclampsia: findings from cohort of 10 110 pregnancies in Spain

D. Cuenca-Gomez et al.

Summary: The Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) competing-risks model, incorporating maternal characteristics, mean arterial pressure (MAP), uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI), and placental growth factor (PlGF) (the 'triple test'), is effective in predicting preterm pre-eclampsia (PE) in the Spanish population at 11-13 weeks' gestation.

Summary: This study compares the predictive performance of PlGF and PAPP-A in screening for preterm-PE, and finds that PlGF performs better than PAPP-A.

Prediction of spontaneous preterm birth and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes using maternal factors, obstetric history and biomarkers of placental function at 11-13 weeks

C. P. H. Chiu et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of first-trimester biomarkers of placental function to screen for spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) and develops prediction models using maternal factors, obstetric history, and biomarkers to calculate patient-specific risk for sPTB. The study found that low levels of maternal serum PAPP-A and PlGF in the first trimester are associated with increased risks of sPTB and PPROM at < 37 weeks. However, further research is needed to improve the screening performance of the combined model before clinical application.

Routine first-trimester pre-eclampsia screening and risk of preterm birth

V. GIORGIONE et al.

Summary: Preterm birth (PTB) is a major public health issue worldwide, and this study aimed to investigate whether there is a shared uteroplacental etiology in PTB subtypes during the first trimester of pregnancy. The analysis found that factors used to predict preterm PE risk could also be used to predict PTB at < 33 weeks, suggesting a shared etiological pathway for preterm births.

The 2021 International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy classification, diagnosis & management recommendations for international practice*

Laura A. Magee et al.

Summary: Uniform departmental management protocols should be maintained for managing hypertensive pregnant women, and regular audits of maternal and fetal outcomes should be conducted. The cause and optimal clinical management of pre-eclampsia and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy remain uncertain, therefore, it is recommended that every hypertensive pregnant woman be given the opportunity to participate in research, clinical trials, and follow-up studies.

Summary: The study evaluates the clinical effectiveness of implementing a first-trimester combined pre-eclampsia screening program in a public healthcare setting. The results show a significant reduction in screen-positive rate, increased aspirin use, and effective identification of preterm pre-eclampsia.
