Agricultural intensification and climate change are rapidly decreasing insect biodiversity

Peter H. Raven et al.

Summary: The decline in insect biomass and diversity since the end of World War II has been directly linked to the spread and intensification of agriculture, as well as climate change in some regions. Industrialized farming practices, such as monoculturing and the use of pesticides, have had destructive effects on insect and other biodiversity. To mitigate the effects of the Sixth Mass Extinction event, efforts will need to focus on stabilizing human population, sustainable consumption levels, and empowering less wealthy people and nations.

Efficient movement strategies mitigate the energetic cost of dispersal

James A. Klarevas-Irby et al.

Summary: Dispersal is a critical and costly stage of life for organisms, but efficient movement strategies can significantly reduce the energy costs of large-scale displacements, allowing dispersing individuals to move faster and farther with minimal additional costs.

Avian Use of Agricultural Areas as Migration Stopover Sites: A Review of Crop Management Practices and Ecological Correlates

J. David Blount et al.

Summary: An estimated 17% of migratory bird species are threatened or near threatened with extinction, posing an enormous potential loss of biodiversity and cost to human societies. Conservation of these birds is challenging due to their reliance on multiple geographically distinct habitats, including stopover sites. Agricultural areas, particularly those with higher non-cultivated plant diversity, are found to be important stopover habitats for migrating birds that can utilize a large breadth of habitats.
