Outdoor Performance of Organic Photovoltaics: Comparative Analysis

Alberto Dolara et al.

Summary: Organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells are an emerging and promising solution for low-cost clean energy production, with significant advantages over conventional PV technologies. However, the commercialization of this technology has been hindered by relatively low efficiencies, poor long-term stability, and thermal issues.

Integrating organic photovoltaics (OPVs) into greenhouses: electrical performance and lifetimes of OPVs

Esther Magadley et al.

Summary: This paper presents the electrical performance of organic photovoltaic modules (OPVs) on top of a polyethylene covered greenhouse high tunnel in a Mediterranean climate. The study found that the modules had low conversion efficiencies, with a burn-in period of around 15 days resulting in a 36% efficiency loss, and that tunnel integration accelerated module degradation.

Progress and challenges of crop production and electricity generation in agrivoltaic systems using semi-transparent photovoltaic technology

Shiva Gorjian et al.

Summary: The world population is growing and so is the demand for food. To cope with climate change and global warming, areas are being used to generate clean electricity. The combination of crop production and solar photovoltaics in agrivoltaic technology offers a resource-efficient solution to the competition for arable lands. The implementation of agrivoltaic systems has increased exponentially in recent years, with c-Si STPV modules being the most commonly employed technology.

Comprehensive review on the application of inorganic and organic photovoltaics as greenhouse shading materials

Li Lu et al.

Summary: Agrivoltaic greenhouse is a creative integration between agriculture and Photovoltaic infrastructures to address land use competition between solar PV and agriculture. By selecting suitable materials, the PV shading layer can reduce excess solar heat stress on plants and improve the microclimate and plant growth in the greenhouse. Studies from the last ten years show that OPV materials with strong NIR absorption and strong visible light transmittance are considered ideal for greenhouse shading.

Energy partitioning and spatial variability of air temperature, VPD and radiation in a greenhouse tunnel shaded by semitransparent organic PV modules

Maayan Friman-Peretz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of nonhomogeneous shading by semitransparent OPV modules on energy partitioning and spatial variability of radiation, air temperature, and VPD within a greenhouse tunnel housing tomato crops. Results showed that spatial variability of radiation was smaller on cloudy days compared to sunny days, while variability in air temperature and VPD remained relatively constant. Most net radiation was converted into latent heat, and spatial variability of radiation was higher with a high solar elevation angle. Further experiments are needed to determine optimal arrangement of OPV modules on the roof to minimize spatial variability.

Semi-Transparent Organic Photovoltaics Applied as Greenhouse Shade for Spring and Summer Tomato Production in Arid Climate

Rebekah Waller et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the feasibility of using flexible, roll-to-roll printed, semi-transparent OPV arrays as a roof shade for greenhouse hydroponic tomato production in arid southwestern U.S. Although fruit development and ripening were delayed in the OPV-shaded area, the total yields and fruit mass were not significantly different from the Control section.
