Understanding the effects of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic shear forces on Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm growth

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of interfaces and mechanical forces on biofilm development using a microfluidic platform. The results showed that air-liquid interface (ALI) biofilms were thicker, less permeable, and more resistant to antibiotics compared to liquid-liquid interface (LLI) biofilms. Subjecting the biofilms to mechanical shear stresses resulted in thinner and denser biofilms, and increased antibiotic resistance.

Effect of the Anode Structure on the Performance of Oily Sludge Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells

Haiying Guo et al.

Summary: The anode is a crucial factor in improving the efficiency of the single-chamber bioelectrochemical system in degrading oily sludge and generating electricity. This study investigated the effect of the anode structure on the performance of oily sludge microbial fuel cells (SMFCs). The results showed that using carbon felt as the anode material, transverse arrangement, and increasing the number of anodes to six accelerated the degradation rate of oily sludge and improved electricity generation performance.
