Bioaugmentation performance for moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) treating mariculture wastewater by an isolated novel halophilic heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HNAD) strain (Zobellella B307)

Zhuangzhuang Xiang et al.

Summary: Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) exhibits poor nitrogen removal efficiency for mariculture wastewater treatment in high salinity environment. Introduction of a novel halophilic heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HNAD) strain (Zobellella B307) into the MBBR process enhances nitrogen removal. The strain Zobellella B307 demonstrates high ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) removal efficiency (90.9% and 97.1% respectively) after 10 hours cultivation, and shows strong resistance to salinity variation (efficient growth and nitrogen removal at a salinity of 65 parts per thousand). Moreover, the bioaugmentation of strain Zobellella B307 results in significant removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+-N, and NO3--N (reaching 95.6%, 94.4%, and 85.7% respectively). Microbial community analysis reveals successful proliferation of strain Zobellella B307 (relative abundance increased to 2.33%). Increased abundance and dominance of HNAD bacteria during nitrogen removal process contribute to improved nitrogen removal. Microbial functional analysis indicates enhanced carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism categories with the addition of strain Zobellella B307, promoting nitrogen removal.

Fe-loaded alginate hydrogel beads activating peroxymonosulfate for enhancing anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Performance and potential mechanism

Yaqian Chai et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel strategy using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by Fe-loaded sodium alginate hydrogel beads (Fe-SA) to enhance anaerobic fermentation (AF) performance. The experimental results showed that Fe-SA and PMS co-pretreatment synergistically enhanced waste activated sludge (WAS) solubilization and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production. Mechanistic studies revealed that Fe-SA greatly induced the generation of reactive radicals from PMS, which contributed to WAS disintegration and degradation of refractory compounds.

Selection and synthesization of multi-carbon source composites to enhance simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in treating low C/N wastewater

Linzhi Zou et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the constituents of composite solid carbon to propose a new multi-carbon source composite S1 for enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency in low C/N ratio wastewater. The results showed that MCSC.S1 significantly improved total nitrification removal through releasing carbon and absorbing attached denitrifying bacteria, while also simulating the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process. 16S gene-based analysis identified enrichment of nitrification and denitrification-related bacteria in MCSC.S1 added reactor, contributing to the overall nitrogen removal.

Occurrence of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification induced by decreasing salinity in a halophilic AGS SBR treating hypersaline wastewater

Ji-Lin Huang et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) is a promising method for nitrogen removal, and this study found that autotrophic nitrification can be converted into HN-AD in a halophilic aerobic granular sludge (HAGS) system. HAGS with dominant bacteria affiliated to Paracoccus showed stable performance in removing total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in response to salinity variations, and HN-AD was inhibited under extreme salinity conditions.

Simultaneous removal of high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and calcium by the novel strain Paracoccus denitrificans AC-3 with good environmental adaptability

Lili Zheng et al.

Summary: The novel Paracoccus denitrificans AC-3 strain demonstrated exceptional purification capability for high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and calcium. It also showed excellent adaptability to a wide range of pH and high levels of ammonia nitrogen and calcium. The removal of ammonia nitrogen involved assimilation and heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification, while calcium was removed by forming calcium carbonate through the action of carbonic anhydrase and carbonate and bicarbonate ions obtained from carbon dioxide hydration. The resulting calcite-like CaCO3 exhibited unique morphology and composition.

Effect of dissolved oxygen on high C/N wastewater treatment in moving bed biofilm reactors based on heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification: Nitrogen removal performance and potential mechanisms

Xueying Bian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on nitrogen removal in high C/N wastewater treatment. The results showed that dissolved oxygen concentration significantly affected the efficiency of total nitrogen removal. Within a certain range, increasing dissolved oxygen concentration improved the removal efficiency, but excessively high concentrations did not further promote nitrogen removal. The influence of dissolved oxygen concentration on nitrogen removal was influenced by the combined action of functional bacteria and electron flow.

Influence mechanism of filling ratio on solid-phase denitrification with polycaprolactone as biofilm carrier

Xin He et al.

Summary: This study constructed three up-flow fixed-bed bioreactors with different filling ratios of polycaprolactone (PCL) and found that a low filling ratio favored microbial attachment and growth, while a high influent nitrate load promoted the presence of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. Therefore, reducing the filling ratio or increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) may be effective measures to save costs for nitrate removal.
