Recent Advances in the Biosynthesis of Polyhydroxyalkanoates from Lignocellulosic Feedstocks

Sevakumaran Vigneswari et al.

Summary: PHA, a biodegradable polymer, has the potential to replace synthetic plastics. However, its production is hindered by high costs and reliance on non-renewable carbon sources. Thus, utilizing waste lignocellulosic feedstocks as a renewable and affordable carbon source is being explored to reduce production costs and advance the biopolymer sector.

Enhanced polyhydroxybutyrate production from acid whey through determination of process and metabolic limiting factors

Liyuan Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioconversion of acid whey to biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) using recombinant E. coli LSBJ, achieving high PHB yields. Factors such as lactate:lactose ratios and C/N impacted metabolic flux and PHB yields, while maintaining fermentation pH and adding inorganic nitrogen sources, minerals, and trace metals promoted PHB production. Ultimately, the study improved understanding of AW utilization factors and demonstrated the potential for sustainable PHB production using recombinant E. coli.

Balancing sugar recovery and inhibitor generation during energycane processing: Coupling cryogenic grinding with hydrothermal pretreatment at low temperatures

Shraddha Maitra et al.

Summary: This study found that the optimal pretreatment temperature for energycane bagasse is 170 degrees Celsius, with significantly less inhibitor production below this temperature and an exponential increase in total inhibitor production beyond it. Biomass solids loading has a significant effect on inhibitor generation at higher pretreatment temperatures, with concentrations of certain inhibitors increasing more than threefold on doubling the solids loading. Additionally, a novel low-severity approach combining low-temperature hydrothermal pretreatment with cryogenic grinding has been introduced to improve sugar yields while keeping inhibitor concentrations low.
