The effect of water content on lignin solubilization in deep eutectic solvents

Yuling Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, amino acid-polyol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used to dissolve dealkaline lignin (DAL) efficiently. It was found that the addition of water improved the mass transfer and activated the reaction sites in the DESs, leading to enhanced lignin solubilities. This work provides insights into the structure-performance relationship of hydrated DESs and highlights the importance of water in improving their versatility and potential applications.

Ultrafast process of microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent to improve properties of bamboo dissolving pulp

Chao Duan et al.

Summary: In this work, an ultrafast microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (MW-DES) process was proposed for viscosity control and reactivity enhancement in the production of high-quality cellulose products. The MW-DES process achieved simultaneous fiber swelling and cellulose depolymerization, resulting in a significant decrease in pulp viscosity and increase in reactivity. The DES used in the process showed high reusability and chemical stability, providing a simple, sustainable, and effective alternative for upgrading dissolving pulp from non-wood materials such as bamboo.

Simultaneous strengthening and toughening lignin/cellulose nanofibril composite films: Effects from flexible hydrogen bonds

Jinfen Ou et al.

Summary: This study developed a strategy to produce cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite films using lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) as a reinforcing agent. The results showed that LNPs with higher phenolic hydroxyl (Ph-OH) content greatly improved the mechanical properties and UV-blocking ability of the composite films. Similar enhanced properties were also observed when LNPs were added into polyvinyl alcohol.

Enhancing saccharification of bamboo shoot shells by rapid one-pot pretreatment of hydrated deep eutectic solvent

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: A rapid one-pot hydrated deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment using benzyl triethylammonium chloride (BTEAC), formic acid (FA), and water was proposed to convert carbohydrates from lignocellulosic biomass to monosaccharides. The hydrated DES showed significantly higher monosaccharide yield compared to the pure DES. The 30% hydrated DES pretreatment achieved the best glucose yield and a high conversion ratio of carbohydrates to monosaccharides. The proposed method is a robust and efficient way to convert carbohydrates from bamboo shoot shells (BSS) into monosaccharides.

Reductive catalytic fractionation as a novel pretreatment/lignin-first approach for lignocellulosic biomass valorization: A review

Meenu Jindal et al.

Summary: Currently, the main focus of using lignocellulosic biomass is to produce pulp/paper, energy, sugars, and bioethanol, disregarding the high content of aromatic carbon and energy in lignin. The 'lignin-first' or 'reductive catalytic fractionation' (RCF) process has been developed in recent years to selectively produce phenolic monomers from lignin under mild reaction conditions. This study aims to review the recent developments of the 'lignin-first' process and highlights the contribution of RCF biorefinery towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), concluding with an overview of challenges and upcoming opportunities.

Revealing the relationship between molecular weight of lignin and its color, UV-protecting property

Yarong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of lignin molecular weight on its UV-protecting property and color were investigated to develop a high-performance lignin-based sunscreen. It was found that low molecular weight lignin exhibited good UV protection and light color advantages. The combination of low molecular weight lignin and EHMC showed a strong synergistic effect on the UV-protecting property. Addition of TiO2 effectively mitigated the dark color of lignin-based sunscreens. Furthermore, the lignin-based sunscreens demonstrated good biocompatibility with HaCaT cells.
