Insights into the mechanism of the deterioration of mainstream partial nitritation/anammox under low residual ammonium

Yandong Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of residual ammonium on the stability of mainstream partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) systems and reveals that low ammonium conditions lead to a decline in anammox activity and increased nitrite oxidation rate. The study provides insights for the optimized design of mainstream PN/A systems in engineering applications.

Responses of microbial interactions to elevated salinity in activated sludge microbial community

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: Biological treatment processes play a crucial role in sewage purification, and microbial interactions have a significant impact on treatment performance. This study investigated the microbial interactions in an activated sludge system under elevated salinity using association network analysis. The results showed that higher salinity led to lower microbial diversity and more competitive overall networks, resulting in reduced treatment process efficiency. The subnetworks of major phyla and functional bacteria differed significantly under elevated salinity, with Nitrosomonas making a greater contribution to nitrification and denitrifiers establishing more cooperative relationships to resist salinity stress. Keystone species crucial for process stability were found to be dynamic and less abundant under salinity disturbance. This study deepened our understanding of microbial interactions in activated sludge systems under elevated salinity.

Removal of ammonium and nitrate through Anammox and FeS-driven autotrophic denitrification

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: An autotrophic denitrifying bioreactor with FeS as the electron donor was operated for over 298 days to synergistically remove NH4+ and NO3- from wastewater. The concentration of FeS significantly influenced the removal of NH4+/NO3-. A low hydraulic retention time led to a decrease in removal efficiency. At a hydraulic retention time of 12 h, optimal removal was achieved with NH4+ and NO3- removal percentages above 88%, and nitrogen removal loading rates of 49.1 and 44.0 mg/(L.d) for NH4+ and NO3- respectively.

China's carbon neutrality: an extensive and profound systemic reform

Xi Lu et al.

Summary: China, as the largest developing economy and carbon dioxide emitter, has a significant role in shaping the global climate change mitigation pathway through its carbon neutrality goal. The transition to a carbon-neutral society in China is integrated into the construction of ecological civilization and has profound implications for the country's socioeconomic development. This article not only highlights the major challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in China, but also identifies four potential new opportunities: accelerating technological innovations, narrowing regional disparities through reshaping resource values, transforming industrial structures, and reaping co-benefits of pollution and carbon mitigation. Furthermore, the importance of balancing economic growth and carbon mitigation, as well as the collaborative efforts among government, enterprises, and residents, is emphasized through the provision of five policy suggestions.

Insight into the characteristics of microbial communities in a single-stage anammox reactor under different oxygen conditions

Zhaoyang Li et al.

Summary: This study achieved a stable partial nitritation and anammox system in a lab-scale reactor under micro-aerobic conditions, where the highest microbial community richness and most abundant microbial correlation network were observed. In contrast, lower microbial community diversity and simpler correlation network structures were found under anoxic and over-aerated conditions. This suggests that micro-aerobic conditions play a key role in driving a complex microbial community and determining stable nitrogen removal performance.

Response and resilience of anammox consortia to nutrient starvation

Dou Wang et al.

Summary: The transcription patterns of anammox consortia changed significantly under nutrient starvation, indicating a starvation response mechanism. The core autotrophic producers of anammox bacteria were highly resilient and quickly recovered when feeding was resumed. These findings provide important insights into the capacity of anammox consortia to respond to stress and maintain process stability.

Comparison of inhibitory roles on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by hydroxylamine and hydrazine during the establishment of partial nitrification

Junkai Zhao et al.

Summary: The inhibitory roles of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) and hydrazine (N2H4) on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were investigated in a comparative study. The results showed that nitrite accumulation was achieved by adding NH2OH or N2H4, with NH2OH having a more significant effect. However, nitritation deteriorated after the cessation of inhibitors addition.

Xuwang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that bioaugmentation can effectively enhance the removal of nitrogen-containing organic pollutants from coking wastewater. Both the bioaugmented and non-bioaugmented systems maintained high removal efficiencies for pollutants during long-term operation. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed distinct microbial community structures between the bioaugmented and non-bioaugmented groups.

Rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria linked to floc aggregates in a single-stage partial nitritation-anammox process: Providing the initial carrier and anaerobic microenvironment

Jialin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of floc aggregates in the enrichment of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in a partial nitritation-anammox bioreactor. The addition of excess sodium acetate induced the formation of small floc aggregates, providing an initial biological carrier and necessary anaerobic microenvironment for the growth of attached AnAOB. These results suggest that floc aggregates play a crucial role in the enrichment of AnAOB and can be influenced by operational conditions.
