A novel stable nitritation process: Treating sludge by alternating free nitrous acid/heat shock

Chengju Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of stable nitritation of sludge alternately treated by free nitrous acid (FNA) and heat shock in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results showed that an FNA concentration of 2.20 mg HNO2-N/L, exposure time of 24 h, and treatment ratio of 20% could effectively inhibit nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity while maintaining the maximum ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) activity.

Comparison of inhibitory roles on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by hydroxylamine and hydrazine during the establishment of partial nitrification

Junkai Zhao et al.

Summary: The inhibitory roles of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) and hydrazine (N2H4) on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were investigated in a comparative study. The results showed that nitrite accumulation was achieved by adding NH2OH or N2H4, with NH2OH having a more significant effect. However, nitritation deteriorated after the cessation of inhibitors addition.

Simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in biofilm systems for wastewater treatment: Key factors, potential routes, and engineered applications

Francesco Di Capua et al.

Summary: Simultaneous nitrification-denitrification is a bioprocess that efficiently removes ammonia nitrogen through sequential redox reactions. It can be applied in biofilm systems and recent advances have shown the potential to reduce carbon and energy consumption while removing both nitrogen and phosphorus.

The role of hydroxylamine in promoting conversion from complete nitrification to partial nitrification: NO toxicity inhibition and its characteristics

Junkai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of hydroxylamine can promote the accumulation of nitrite in a complete nitrification reactor, leading to partial nitrification, but the process will gradually disappear after stopping the hydroxylamine addition. Analysis of the microbial community revealed that the inhibition of Nitrospira is significant and reversible, possibly related to NO toxicity.

Does exogenous carbon source always promote algal biomass and nutrients removal in algal-bacterial wastewater remediation?

Yuming Zhong et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the interactive network analysis between algae and wastewater-borne bacteria to identify beneficial bacteria and assess the impact of glycerol on a beneficial bacterial strain. Results showed that co-cultivating microalgae and Pseudomonas dramatically enhanced biomass yield and nutrients removal efficiencies, but the addition of glycerol led to the collapse of the algal-bacterial consortia in the late stage of co-cultivation, reducing treatment efficiency and biomass. It is suggested that non-fermentative bacteria as main probiotics in algal-based wastewater remediation should be used to provide small-molecule-weight organics as carbon sources.

Inactivation kinetics of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that free nitrous acid (FNA) has biocidal effects on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), significantly reducing active NOB concentration. The Weibull model can accurately describe the biocidal effect of FNA, facilitating the optimization of FNA conditions. However, long-term implementation of FNA-based technology may lead to issues of NOB adaptation.

Achieving stable and long-term partial nitrification of domestic wastewater by side-stream sludge treatment using a novel nitrite oxidation inhibitor chloroxylenol

Zhiqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of achieving partial nitrification in real domestic wastewater using the novel inhibitor chloroxylenol (PCMX). Different treatment strategies had varying effects on the maintenance of partial nitrification, with the concentrative time strategy proving to be more effective. Additionally, the risks of using PCMX were assessed and found to be minimal, with almost no detectable PCMX in the effluent of mainstream sequencing batch reactors.

NADH accumulation during DPAO denitrification in a simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal system

Jianqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that DPAOs have higher denitrification activity than DGAOs in a SNDPR system. High concentration of nitrite added at the end of anaerobic operation led to high NO accumulation in the system.
