Microwave-assisted extraction of lignin from coconut coir using deep eutectic solvents and its valorization to aromatics

Akshay R. Mankar et al.

Summary: In this study, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride and carboxylic acid were successfully used to extract lignin from coconut coir under microwave irradiation, yielding 82% lignin with >95% purity. The severity factor for the pretreatment process was significantly lower, thanks to efficient microwave heating. The extracted lignin was converted to aromatics via catalytic transfer hydrogenation, showing promising results for the delignification of lignocellulosic biomass.

Mechanism study of ternary deep eutectic solvents with protonic acid for lignin fractionation

Weixian Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fractionation of lignin using ternary deep eutectic solvents (DES) with different polyols. The results show that ChCl-EG-PTSA DES exhibits the highest degradability towards lignin, with a high total interaction energy and number of hydrogen bonds. ChCl plays a dominant role in lignin fractionation and forms hydrogen bonds with γ-OH, while the polyols prefer to form hydrogen bonds with α-OH. The addition of PTSA disrupts the stacking interactions between lignin molecules and enhances the interaction between DES and lignin.

Low-condensed lignin and high-purity cellulose production from poplar by synergistic deep eutectic solvent-hydrogenolysis pretreatment

Shuangmei Han et al.

Summary: This paper presents a green and environmentally friendly method to obtain lignin with a structure similar to milled wood lignin (MWL) and high-purity cellulose from biomass. This is achieved through a two-step process: pretreatment with a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) to obtain lignin with a less-condensed structure, and catalytic hydrogenolysis to obtain high-purity cellulose. The results show that this method is effective in separating biomass and can significantly increase the yield of glucose after enzymatic hydrolysis.

Effective biomass fractionation and lignin stabilization using a diol DES system

Jinyuan Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a diol-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) was developed to improve the saccharification of bamboo and valorize the lignin fraction. The DES pretreatment effectively removed lignin and xylan, resulting in enhanced glucan digestibility. The recovered lignin from DES pretreatment showed well-preserved 8-O-4 structures, indicating the potential of diol DES as a promising pretreatment solvent for cellulose and lignin conversion.

Enhancing α-etherification of lignin in Eucalyptus diol pretreatment to improve lignin monomer production

Chengyu Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, the alpha-etherification of lignin in diol pretreatment was enhanced, resulting in efficient isolation of lignin and subsequent valorisation. The diol pretreatment removed over 90% of lignin from Eucalyptus, enabling a high conversion of cellulose. The catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis of the isolated lignin produced a significant monomer yield, which was five times higher than the yield from the technical ethanol process. The findings suggest that diol pretreatment can effectively isolate lignin for hydrogenolysis without compromising the yield of lignin and cellulose hydrolysis.

The Effect of Acidic Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvent Treatment on Native Lignin

Zhiwen Wang et al.

Summary: Ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are being explored as a green alternative medium for lignocellulosic biomass processing. Acidic DES systems with alcohols can modify lignin structure and produce low- and high-molecular-weight products that are difficult to recover. Further investigation is needed to understand the effect of these DES systems on lignin.

Revealing the structure-activity relationship between lignin and anti-UV radiation

Minsheng Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of lignin structure on its UV radiation protection properties was investigated using different lignin model compounds. It was found that the UV protection properties of lignin model compounds vary depending on their structures, with 0-O-4 linkages showing the least desirable UV protection properties. The side-chain differences, particularly the presence of conjugate structures and carboxylic groups, significantly impact the UV performance of lignin model compounds.
