Screening of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) along wastewater treatment system equipped with root zone treatment: A potential model for domestic waste leachate management

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: This study presents the use of a root zone treatment (RZT) system to remove pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from domestic wastewater. The occurrence and removal of various PPCPs were investigated in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The study found that some unusual PPCPs were detected in the WWTP, while the more commonly reported ones were also present. The RZT-based WWTP was effective in removing PPCPs, but further research is needed to understand their exact removal efficacy and fate during treatment.

Co-pyrolysis of coke bottle wastes with cellulose, lignin and sawdust: Impacts of the mixed feedstock on char properties

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The co-pyrolysis of coke bottle with biomass sawdust, cellulose, and lignin at 700 degrees C resulted in enhanced cross-polymerization of volatiles, leading to decreased gas formation and increased char and oil production. The interactions of volatiles also affected the chemical composition and thermal stability of the resulting char significantly.

Critical review on negative emerging contaminant removal efficiency of wastewater treatment systems: Concept, consistency and consequences

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) cannot be completely removed by wastewater treatment due to their ability to form complexes, toxic derivatives, byproducts, and to dynamically partition. Negative contaminant removal, i.e., higher concentrations (up to 5731%) of these ECs in the effluent compared to the influent, is globally widespread in almost all types of treatment systems. Conventional WWTPs show the highest negative removal (NR) for Carbamazepine and Carbadox. NR efficiencies are influenced by conjugation-deconjugation, types of WWTPs, transformations, leaching, operational parameters, sampling schemes, and the nature of the substances. Pesticides and beta-blockers exhibit the highest percentage of NR among various categories of micropollutants, posing a threat to human health and the environment. With beta-blockers showing >200% NR, low blood-pressure related symptoms may become more prevalent in the near future. This study highlights the phenomenon of negative removal that requires urgent attention.
