Laila Dina Amalia Purba et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge in real low-strength wastewater treatment and its potential for biodiesel production. The results showed high removal efficiencies for COD, NH4+-N, and phosphate, meeting the effluent standard. Core microbiome analysis revealed important microbial groups in the bacterial community, while photosynthetic microorganisms dominated the algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge. High lipid content and favorable fatty acid composition were found in the granules, indicating their potential for biodiesel production.

Environmentally relevant level of perfluorooctanoic acid affect the formation of aerobic granular sludge

Zhouyun Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). The results showed that 0.1 mg/L PFOA delayed the formation of AGS and affected the nutrient removal efficiency of the reactor. Microbial analysis revealed changes in the abundance of certain bacterial groups, but overall, AGS maintained its structure and functions.

Characteristics of NO2--N accumulation in partial denitrification during granular sludge formation

Xinbo Wu et al.

Summary: A partial denitrification (PD) system was established in an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) to treat low-concentration nitrate wastewater. The study examined the characteristics of NO2- -N accumulation during granular sludge formation by controlling the COD/NO3- -N ratio and hydraulic retention time (HRT). The results showed that the increase in particle size was correlated with the rise in the PN content of EPS, and microbial analysis revealed the dominant genera in the reactor responsible for NO2- -N accumulation. This study confirmed the feasibility of rapid PD granular sludge formation under low C/N and nitrogen loads.

Understanding the effects of algae growth on algae-bacterial granular sludge formation: From sludge characteristics, extracellular polymeric substances, and microbial community

Zhe Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of algae growth on the formation of algae-bacterial granular sludge were evaluated. The results showed that algae played a key role in improving biomass growth and sludge settleability by providing attachment carriers for microbial aggregation. The algae-bacterial granular sludge formed earlier, had a larger size, and exhibited enhanced removal efficiency of various pollutants. Furthermore, the presence of algae in the sludge facilitated the production of extracellular polymeric substances with altered chemical composition and increased content of certain protein structures.

Responses of straw foam-based aerobic granular sludge to atrazine: Insights from metagenomics and microbial community variations

Yu Jin et al.

Summary: By developing a straw foam-based aerobic granular sludge (SF-AGS), the drug tolerance and biodegradation efficiency of atrazine (ATZ) can be greatly improved. The results showed that ATZ, as well as chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN), were effectively removed within 6 hours, with removal efficiencies as high as 93.37%, 85.33%, 84.7%, and 70%, respectively. The SF-AGS also stimulated the secretion of three times more extracellular polymers by microbial consortia. The study demonstrated the feasibility of SF-AGS for the treatment of ATZ-laden low-strength wastewater.

Description of new single-chamber continuous-flow reactors of aerobic granular sludge: Technical and biological study

Aurora Rosa-Masegosa et al.

Summary: Aerobic granular sludge reactors usually operate in sequential batch mode, limiting the treatment of large volumes of wastewater. This study designed and operated four continuous-flow reactors to evaluate a bioreactor configuration that achieves high organic matter removal performance while maintaining stable granulation. Results confirmed the effectiveness of a bioreactor with a lateral decanter, which achieved a retention rate of 95% and had excellent compaction and settling velocity values. Further research is needed to optimize this design for full-scale implementation.

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: The novel Electro-dialysis ion-exchange membrane bioreactor (EDIMB) showed efficient removal of perchlorate and nitrate from aqueous solution by combining electrodialysis with bioreduction. The process of pollutant removal in water and bio compartments can be well simulated using the First-order kinetic model and Zero-Michaelis-Menten model. Simultaneous reduction of perchlorate and nitrate using fast-settling anoxic sludge

Nathan Stein et al.

Summary: Cultivated fast-settling, anoxic sludge (FAS) was used to simultaneously reduce elevated levels of perchlorate and nitrate in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR). The study achieved high average removal efficiencies of perchlorate and nitrate, with specific reduction rates increasing as the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was decreased. Nitrous oxide (N2O) production was observed due to incomplete denitrification, with different bacterial species enriched at different HRT levels.

Summary: An AGS SBR reactor adapted to salinity was used for the treatment of synthetic saline wastewater containing EDCs. The results showed that E2 was completely biodegraded, while the removal efficiency of EE2 and BPA was lower. The activity of phosphate-accumulating organisms was affected by EDCs, but the activity of ammonium- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was not significantly affected. The microbial diversity increased after the addition of EDCs.
