Preparation of a biobased polyelectrolyte complex from chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and its antibacterial characteristics

Dong Yang et al.

Summary: By using chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as raw materials, a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) was successfully prepared through strong electrostatic interaction. The reactive contact area between the two bio-based polyelectrolytes was enlarged by preparing a crosslinked vacuolar structure without the use of a cross-linker. The yield and bibulous rate of PEC were significantly affected by the preparation conditions, yielding a PEC with 71.2% yield when pH, CMC-Na-to-CTS ratio, stirring speed, and reaction temperature were optimized.

Effective one-pot chemoenzymatic cascade catalysis of biobased feedstock for synthesizing 2,5-diformylfuran in a sustainable reaction system

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study develops an efficient one-pot process for the chemoenzymatic transformation of biobased substrate to 2,5-diformylfuran using deep eutectic solvent (DES) Betaine:Lactic acid ([BA][LA]) catalyst and oxidase biocatalyst. The yields of HMF were 32.8% (15 min) and 91.6% (90 min) at 150 degrees C, using waste bread and D-fructose as feedstocks in [BA][LA]-H2O. The prepared HMF could be biologically oxidized to 2,5-diformylfuran by Escherichia coli pRSFDuet-GOase, achieving a productivity of 0.631 g 2,5-diformylfuran/(g fructose) and 0.323 g 2,5-diformylfuran/(g bread) after 6 h.

Surfactants/citric acid catalyzed hydrothermal carbonization of pomelo peel for solid fuels: Conversion mechanism and combustion performance

Ru Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic effects of different surfactants on the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of pomelo peel. It was found that Span 80 and Tween 80 could significantly enhance the solid yield and heating value of the hydrochar. Co-firing the surfactant-catalyzed hydrochar with coal improved its combustibility and reduced the activation energy.

Highly efficient conversion of sunflower stalk-hydrolysate to furfural by sunflower stalk residue-derived carbonaceous solid acid in deep eutectic solvent/organic solvent system

Lei Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, sunflower stalk was used as a raw material and catalyst for furfural production, and efficient conversion of xylose-rich hydrolysate into furfural was achieved using the carbonaceous solid acid catalyst SO42-/SnO2-SSXR in an aqueous deep eutectic solvent/organic solvent medium. The study revealed that under optimal conditions, a furfural yield of 82.6% was obtained, and the catalyst and solvent exhibited good recyclability for furfural production. This research demonstrates the high potential for sustainable application of furfural production.
