Role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in critically Ill COVID-19 patients and predictors of mortality

Summary: The role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in managing critically ill COVID-19 patients is still unclear. This study of 17 COVID-19 patients treated with ECMO found that IL-6, NT-proBNP, and the RESP score were significant independent predictors of survival. A prediction model incorporating these factors showed improved outcome predictions compared to using the RESP score alone.

A study reviewed the clinical experience of 100 COVID-19 patients supported with ECMO at 20 hospitals, finding that survivors tended to be younger. Substantial variation exists in drug treatments for COVID-19, but ECMO provides a reasonable rescue strategy.
