Apiaceae Medicinal Plants in China: A Review of Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry, Bolting and Flowering (BF), and BF Control Methods

Meiling Li et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the application of Apiaceae plants in traditional Chinese medicine, including the removal of dampness, relief of superficies, and dispelling cold. It also summarizes the traditional use, modern pharmacological use, phytochemistry, effect of bolting and flowering (BF), and approaches for controlling BF of these medicinal plants. Currently, 228 Apiaceae medicinal plants have been recorded as Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs), with 6 medicinal parts, 79 traditional uses, 62 modern pharmacological uses, and 5 main metabolites. The review provides useful references for the reasonable exploration and high-quality production of these plants.

Essential oil of Sicilian Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl. and its major component, β- ocimen, affect contractility in rat small and large intestine

Maria Grazia Zizzo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Sicilian Prangos ferulacea essential oil on the contractility of rat small and large intestine, and the related mechanism. The results showed that the essential oil had different effects on the contractility of the small and large intestine, and it affected the contractions through enhancing neural cholinergic activity, blocking L-type voltage-gated calcium channel, and reducing intracellular calcium release.

Characteristics of Essential Oils of Apiaceae Family: Their Chemical Compositions, in vitro Properties and Effects on Broiler Production

Usman Ali et al.

Summary: There has been a growing interest in phytobiotics as a potential replacement for antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in the broiler industry. Essential oils (EOs), specifically those from the Apiaceae family, have shown significant biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. The positive effects of EOs on broiler production and their involvement in gut health and growth performance have been studied.

Aging modifies receptor expression but not muscular contractile response to angiotensin II in rat jejunum

Maria Grazia Zizzo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contractile responses induced by Ang II in the jejunum of young and old rats, and evaluates possible functional differences associated with changes in receptor expression. The results show that Ang II modulates the spontaneous contractility of rat jejunum via postjunctional AT1 receptors and prejunctional AT2 receptors. Age-related changes in receptor expression are not reflected in the muscular contractile response to Ang II.

Natural products in drug discovery: advances and opportunities

Atanas G. Atanasov et al.

Summary: Natural products and their analogues have historically played a significant role in pharmacotherapy, however, they also present challenges. Recent technological and scientific developments are addressing these challenges and revitalizing interest in natural products as drug leads, particularly for combating antimicrobial resistance.
