Host Immunity and Immunization Strategies for Clostridioides difficile Infection

Farha Naz et al.

Summary: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a significant challenge to public health, designated as an urgent threat by the U.S. CDC. Recurrence is common in CDI patients, likely due to the use of antibiotics as primary treatment. This review summarizes the current understanding of the host's innate and adaptive immune responses to CDI, as well as other factors influencing the disease, such as C. difficile toxins and the host microbiota. It also discusses therapeutic approaches and the status of immunization strategies for CDI.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a globally increasing gastrointestinal inflammatory disorder. Patients with IBD have an increased risk of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), which worsens the clinical outcome of IBD. The underlying reasons for this are still poorly understood.

Glucocorticoid Therapy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mechanisms and Clinical Practice

Stefano Bruscoli et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) and involves immune cell alteration and chronic inflammatory cascade activation against unknown environmental triggers. Therapy focuses on supporting measures and use of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs, with glucocorticoids (GCs) being a cornerstone treatment for moderate-to-severe IBD. However, their use is limited by important adverse drug effects, leading researchers to explore newer, safer alternatives.

Epidemiology of community-acquired and recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection

Yichun Fu et al.

Summary: Clostridioides difficile infection is a major issue in healthcare settings, with a rising incidence of community-associated infections. Patients with community-associated C. difficile tend to be younger with lower mortality rates. Although rates of recurrent C. difficile infection have decreased in the United States, further research and public health efforts are needed to address the changing epidemiology of this disease.
