Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials-Based Recent Approaches in Upgraded Targeting and Management of Cancer: A Review

Anupama Ojha et al.

Summary: According to IARC, the global burden of cancer is expected to reach 27.5 million new cases by 2040. The use of nanomaterials in cancer therapy has shown promising results, including improved surgical resection of tumors, targeted and selective chemotherapy, and enhanced efficacy of radiotherapy, leading to decreased risk and increased survival for cancer patients. This review aims to compile the various types of nanoparticles used in different cancer therapies to provide researchers with knowledge on their mechanisms of action and potential for improving cancer treatment.

Thermoacoustic Imaging-Guided Thermo-Chemotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Sensitized by a Microwave-Responsive Nitric Oxide Nanogenerator

Liewei Wen et al.

Summary: Imaging-guided percutaneous microwave thermotherapy is an important alternative nonsurgical therapeutic strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), providing excellent local tumor control and survival benefit. However, there is an urgent need for a high-resolution, real-time, noninvasive imaging technique for intraoperative guidance and control of postoperative tumor recurrence.

Light-Triggered Nitric Oxide Nanogenerator with High l-Arginine Loading for Synergistic Photodynamic/Gas/Photothermal Therapy

Hui Shi et al.

Summary: The development of nanomedicines that combine photothermal therapy (PTT) with photodynamic therapy (PDT) is promising for cancer treatment. However, the efficiency of these therapies is hindered by the low loading efficiency of nitric oxide (NO) precursor. Researchers have constructed a mitochondria-targeted nitric oxide nanogenerator to achieve high loading of NO for synergistic photodynamic/gas/photothermal therapy upon single light irradiation.

Dendronized DNA Chimeras Harness Scavenger Receptors To Degrade Cell Membrane Proteins

Chenghong Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel dendronized DNA chimera (DENTAC) strategy was developed to degrade disease-relevant membrane proteins by utilizing dendritic DNA as lysosome-trafficking receptors (LTRs). The DENTAC was able to target protein binders and facilitate the lysosomal degradation of protein targets. The efficacy of the DENTAC was demonstrated by degrading oncogenic nucleolin (NCL) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and its anti-cancer application was validated in a mouse xenograft model. This work presents a new avenue for the rapid development of potent degraders against membrane proteins with wide research and therapeutic prospects.

Two-Photon Excitation Spectroscopy of Silicon Quantum Dots and Ramifications for Bio-Imaging

Brandon J. Furey et al.

Summary: Colloidal nanocrystalline silicon quantum dots (nc-SiQDs) excited by two-photon in the near-infrared (NIR) range have potential applications in deep biological imaging. The two-photon absorption (2PA) cross section of colloidal nc-SiQDs is measured, and it is found to be smaller for smaller diameter nanocrystals. The efficiencies of nc-SiQDs for bioimaging using two-photon excited photoluminescence (2PE-PL) are compared to other quantum dots and molecular fluorophores and found to be comparable or superior at greater depths.

Synthesis of biocompatible and highly fluorescent N-doped silicon quantum dots from wheat straw and ionic liquids for heavy metal detection and cell imaging

Jianqiang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, SiQDs doped with nitrogen were successfully synthesized using waste wheat straw and allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. These SiQDs showed excellent water dispersity and strong fluorescence emission, making them suitable for metal detection and cell imaging. The SiQDs displayed linear fluorescence quenching with Cr(VI) and Fe(III) concentrations, and when immobilized on hydrophilic silica hydrogels, they exhibited enhanced fluorescence emission and selective detection abilities. Cell imaging results showed low cytotoxicity of the SiQDs, indicating their potential as biocompatible fluorescent nanomaterials.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
