Electrochemically stable, cost-effective and facile produced selenium@activated carbon composite counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Erdi Akman et al.

Summary: This study reports the production of selenium@activated carbon (Se@AC) composites as an alternative to platinum (Pt) for dye-sensitized solar cells. The Se@AC composite counter electrodes showed significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and charge transfer properties, resulting in a DSSC with performance close to that of the Pt-based reference. The cost-effective and facile production process of the Se@AC composite makes it an effective alternative to expensive Pt.

Pyrolysis of furfural residues: Property and applications of the biochar

Stelgen Inkoua et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pyrolysis of furfural residue (FR) and finds that the temperature and heating rate have an influence on the composition and characteristics of the pyrolysis products. The main products of pyrolysis are biochar and gases formed from cracking. Increasing pyrolysis temperature favors the formation of organics with fused ring structures. Lower heating rate helps to form biochar with higher thermal stability. In addition, transformations such as dehydration of -OH, dehydrogenation of -C-H into = C-H, and cracking of C=O were observed during pyrolysis. Activation of the FR-derived biochar generates abundant micropores and mesopores, providing superior specific capacitance and adsorption efficiency.

Life-cycle assessment of hydrogen production via catalytic gasification of wheat straw in the presence of straw derived biochar catalyst

Adrian Chun Minh Loy et al.

Summary: This study examined the environmental footprints of H-2 production via catalytic gasification of wheat straw using straw-derived biochar catalysts. The hot spots in the process were identified, with product separation unit (P4) having the greatest environmental impact. The proposed biochar catalyst showed similar catalytic performance with metal-based catalysts but with lower environmental impact, as indicated by benchmarking analysis.

Critical impacts of pyrolysis conditions and activation methods on application-oriented production of wood waste-derived biochar

Mingjing He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of different pyrolysis conditions and activation methods on the properties of biochar. It found that a temperature of 650 degrees Celsius was effective in forming carbonized structure, while 750 degrees Celsius was critical for the development of a porous structure. Longer pyrolysis duration increased pore volume, and activated biochar had a larger pore volume suitable for high-end applications.

Co-pyrolysis of swine manure and pinewood sawdust: Evidence of cross-interaction of the volatiles and profound impacts on product characteristics

Qingyin Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the co-pyrolysis of swine manure and pinewood sawdust, revealing the significant impact of cross-interaction of volatiles on the evolution of pyrolysis products. The interaction effect favors bio-oil and biochar formation while diminishing gas production. The bio-oil from co-pyrolysis is lighter and inhibits the generation of nitrogenous species, while the biochar becomes oxygen-rich and gains enhanced thermal stability.

In situ characterization of functional groups of biochar in pyrolysis of cellulose

Mengjiao Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of functional groups of biochar at different heating rates, revealing that the abundance of -OH, C\\H, and C_O in biochar peaked at 410-450 degrees Celsius before decreasing with further temperature increase. The formation of =C-H was closely correlated with the removal of -C-H and -OH, while cracking of C_O was a decisive factor for the formation of C_C in biochar.
