The use of Telenomus remus (Nixon, 1937) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) in the management of Spodoptera spp.: potential, challenges and major benefits

Summary: The fall armyworm (FAW) is a polyphagous pest that poses a global threat to crops and food security. While pesticides and transgenic events are used to control FAW in maize, biological control agents, particularly the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus, have shown promise in providing sustainable and effective control. This paper reviews the mass rearing techniques, estimated costs, and release strategies of T. remus, highlighting its potential for establishing augmentative biological control programs in countries affected by the recent invasion of FAW in Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Evaluating the Potential of Using Spodoptera litura Eggs for Mass-Rearing Telenomus remus, a Promising Egg Parasitoid of Spodoptera frugiperda

Summary: Our study found that S. litura eggs are more advantageous than S. frugiperda eggs as an alternative host for the mass-rearing of T. remus. The results provide a more specific basis and reference for the large-scale production and low temperature storage of the parasitoid.

Assessing the Potential of Inoculative Field Releases of Telenomus remus to Control Spodoptera frugiperda in Ghana

Summary: The study in Ghana conducted field release trials of the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus for fall armyworm control. The parasitoid was found to parasitize high percentages of fall armyworm egg masses in both major and minor rainy seasons, with similar effectiveness observed in areas outside of release plots, indicating its dispersal ability. A single application of Emamectin benzoate did not significantly affect T. remus parasitism rates, suggesting potential for further investigation in integrated pest management strategies against fall armyworm.
