Examining connection to nature at multiple scales provides insights for urban conservation

Matthew J. Selinske et al.

Summary: With the rapid urbanization, local governments and organizations are seeking opportunities to enhance the social resilience, health, and wellbeing of urban residents by promoting their connection to nature. Through a survey of 1585 community members in Melbourne, this study aimed to understand their connection to nature and other aspects of their relationship with nature in order to design and prioritize new conservation programs. The study identified demographic, psychographic, and behavioral factors associated with nature connection, characterized different population segments, and identified neighborhoods with high and low nature connection. Overall, the results showed that community members in Melbourne have a relatively high connection to nature, are concerned about environmental issues, and engage in nature-related activities. Different population segments and neighborhoods vary in their level of nature connection.

Psychological and physical connections with nature improve both human well-being and nature conservation: A systematic review of meta-analyses

Gladys Barragan-Jason et al.

Summary: Despite the numerous benefits that the connectedness of humans with nature brings, health and conservation policymakers have not fully taken these benefits into consideration. There is a lack of comprehensive overview due to scattered studies across various disciplines. This systematic review focused on recent meta-analyses and found consistent conclusions, indicating that both physical and psychological connection with nature have positive impacts on human well-being and attitudes towards nature conservation.

Diversifying citizen science through the inclusion of young people

Natasha Louise Constant et al.

Summary: The study examines the motivations, barriers, and recommendations to enhance youth engagement in citizen science, particularly among those without prior experience. Focus groups were conducted with young people, both with and without citizen science experience. Qualitative findings reveal a range of motivations, including career development, new interests and knowledge, altruism, social interactions, inclusivity, and connections to nature and new places. Barriers identified include logistical constraints, lack of knowledge and interest, and programmatic and organizational issues. The implications of these findings for broadening diversity and attracting younger citizen scientists are discussed.

Global synthesis reveals heterogeneous changes in connection of humans to nature

Masashi Soga et al.

Summary: The connection between individuals and nature affects their well-being and support for pro-nature policies. This study presents a global analysis of the changes in people's psychological and physical connections to nature over time. The reviewed literature suggests a decline in human connection to nature, although the magnitude of changes varies depending on geographic and socio-economic settings.

Climate and nature emergency: From scientists' warnings to sufficient action

Alan Cottey

Summary: Scientists have recently published warnings about the climate and ecological emergency, but these warnings have been criticized for not being appealing to non-scientists. However, it is important for expert scientists to accurately and intelligibly express their findings and collaborate with non-specialists from various backgrounds to generate practical actions on a global scale.

Improving Nature Connectedness in Adults: A Meta-Analysis, Review and Agenda

David Sheffield et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of manipulations and field interventions on nature connectedness in adult populations and finds that the short-term effects are moderately positive and similar for immediate and sustained increases. There are no differences in effect size between different types of contact, quality, or timing of engagement.

The Paths to Connectedness: A Review of the Antecedents of Connectedness to Nature

Michael L. Lengieza et al.

Summary: This review outlines the current state of psychological literature on the antecedents of connectedness to nature, including situational contexts, individual difference predictors, and internal psychological states. It also highlights the need for future research to focus on theories delineating the formation of connectedness, process, and increased differentiation between similar antecedents of connectedness.

Associations between green/blue spaces and mental health across 18 countries

Mathew P. White et al.

Summary: Living near, recreating in, and feeling psychologically connected to the natural world are associated with better mental health. Data from an 18-country survey explored associations between mental health measures and exposures to different natural settings, as well as nature connectedness. Results show that green and coastal living spaces are linked to higher well-being, while recreational visits to green, inland-blue, and coastal-blue spaces are associated with positive well-being and lower mental distress. Nature connectedness and green space visits are also correlated with lower likelihood of using depression medication.
