Citizen Science in Deliberative Systems: Participation, Epistemic Injustice, and Civic Empowerment

Lisa Herzog et al.

Summary: This paper brings together the literature on citizen science, deliberative democracy, and epistemic injustice. It argues that citizen science can be seen as part of deliberative systems but needs to address issues of exclusion and epistemic injustice. To tap into the potentials of citizen science from a deliberative democracy perspective, it needs to empower citizens to participate in discussions about research goals and implications. Incorporating citizen science into deliberative systems not only enhances its alignment with democratic theory but also provides a realistic understanding of its potentials and limits.

Youth, place, and educator practices: designing program elements to support relational processes and naturalist identity development

Marijke Hecht et al.

Summary: This paper describes an informal science program aimed at supporting the development of a naturalist identity among youth. Through a case study of a teen program in an urban park, three key elements were identified: physical interaction, stewardship opportunities, and exposure to future visions. The program draws on ecological thinking to emphasize relational processes between youth, educators, and nature.

Step by step towards citizen science - deconstructing youth participation in BioBlitzes

Julia Lorke et al.

Summary: The study found that in BioBlitzes events, few young people participated in the step of recording data, which is crucial for contributing to citizen science, therefore reducing barriers for youth to record data is necessary to increase engagement with science.
