Implementation of species distribution models in Google Earth Engine

Ramiro D. Crego et al.

Summary: Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a free Web-based platform for spatial analysis that allows users to access and analyze satellite imagery and geospatial datasets, making it ideal for species distribution modeling. Case studies demonstrate different model workflows and highlight limitations in implementing species distribution models in GEE.

DEFINING SPATIAL CONSERVATION PRIORITIES FOR THE ANDEAN CONDOR (VULTUR GRYPHUS)

Robert B. Wallace et al.

Summary: The Andean Condor is a culturally iconic wildlife symbol in the South American Andes, but its population is decreasing and it is increasingly threatened. Through the Range Wide Priority Setting methodology, experts identified the historical range, distribution points, and important conservation areas for the Andean Condor. The study provides recommendations for future conservation efforts.

Autocorrelation-informed home range estimation: A review and practical guide

Ines Silva et al.

Summary: Modern tracking devices allow for high-volume animal tracking data collection, but traditional statistical methods may underestimate or overestimate home range areas. The autocorrelated kernel density estimation (AKDE) family of estimators aims to address the complexities of modern movement data, improve statistical efficiency, and reduce biases.

Anthropogenic threats to the Vulnerable Andean Condor in northern South America

Juan Sebastian Restrepo-Cardona et al.

Summary: The Andean Condor is one of the most threatened bird species globally, with a rapidly declining population and local extinctions in northern South America. In Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela, no quantitative assessments have been made regarding the threats affecting Andean Condor populations. This study compiled records of injured or killed condors between 1979 and 2021, revealing high mortality rates due to poisoning and shooting. Urgent actions such as environmental education, research, and management strategies based on scientific evidence are required to prevent human-induced threats and conserve the Andean Condor.

Linking evolutionary potential to extinction risk: applications and future directions

Brenna R. Forester et al.

Summary: Extinction-risk assessments are crucial for prioritizing conservation action, but quantifying extinction risk, especially incorporating evolutionary potential, is challenging. Disregarding evolutionary potential can lead to inadequate resource allocation and recovery planning. Fortunately, proxies for evolutionary potential can be estimated from environmental, phenotypic, and genetic data.

Mapping our knowledge on birds of prey population genetics

Marianne Gousy-Leblanc et al.

Summary: Current anthropogenic environmental changes may have disproportionate impacts on ecosystems, especially on species with critical roles. Global population declines and threats to avian predators call for urgent conservation actions. Lack of empirical genetic studies for Southern Hemisphere species and those at high extinction risk were identified.

Genome-wide diversity in the California condor tracks its prehistoric abundance and decline

Jacqueline A. Robinson et al.

Summary: The study focused on the genome of the California condor, Andean condor, and turkey vulture, revealing that the California condor genome retains a high degree of variation due to its historically high abundance. Correlations between genome-wide diversity and recombination rate suggest a history of purifying selection against linked deleterious alleles, providing a promising foundation for future restoration efforts.

Mitogenomic analysis of extant condor species provides insight into the molecular evolution of vultures

D. De Panis et al.

Summary: The study characterized the mitochondrial genomes of Andean and California condors, revealing the independent evolution of vultures, estimating the radiation of condors, and suggesting a potential degeneration of flapping flight ability in vultures. The results imply that the extreme specialization of vultures for efficient soaring flights has compensated for the selection pressure on mtDNA caused by their large body sizes.
