Waste biomass valorization for the production of biofuels and value-added products: A comprehensive review of thermochemical, biological and integrated processes

Jude A. Okolie et al.

Summary: Waste biomass can be converted to green fuels and value-added products through thermochemical and biological conversion processes. Integrating thermochemical and biological processes enhances resource utilization and promotes a circular economy. Thermochemical processes have limitations in high processing costs, while biological processes face challenges of low product yield and long processing time.

Technology selection for capturing CO2 from wood pyrolysis

Yingying Sun et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the technical and economic performances of integrating different CO2 capture technologies with biomass pyrolysis (PyrCC). The results show that chemical looping combustion (CLC) can achieve the highest amount of CO2 capture with the lowest energy penalty. In addition, CLC and calcium looping (CaL) have the lowest levelized cost of CO2 (LCOC), while monoethanolamine-based chemical absorption (MEA-CA) has the highest LCOC. The reaction time of pyrolysis also affects the performance of CO2 capture, with a longer reaction time leading to increased CO2 capture and reduced energy penalty.

Hydrothermal conversion of different lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks-Effect of the process conditions on hydrochar structures

Fatih Gulec et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal processing of five biomass feedstocks under different conditions revealed structural changes in biomass, categorized into three groups based on lignocellulosic composition. The yield of hydrochar was influenced by the initial structure of the biomass, with higher lignin content biomass showing lower transformation and lower hydrochar yield. Additionally, a novel technique called displacement was introduced to quantify the impact of hydrothermal treatment on biomass structure and reactivity.
