Modeling of microalgal biodiesel production integrated to a sugarcane ethanol plant: Energy and exergy efficiencies and environmental impacts due to trade-offs in the usage of bagasse in the Brazilian context

Sergio Luiz Pinto Castineiras-Filho et al.

Summary: Brazilian sugarcane mills generate renewable products through bagasse cogeneration and aim to convert gaseous outputs into microalgae biodiesel. This study integrates an ethanol plant with a cogeneration system to produce biodiesel from microalgae. The simulation shows that splitting bagasse usage between hydrolysis and cogeneration systems results in optimal energy ratios and environmental efficiencies.

The Brazilian biofuel policy (RenovaBio) and its uncertainties: An assessment of technical, socioeconomic and institutional aspects

Carolina Grangeia et al.

Summary: The RenovaBio policy aims to support Brazil's commitments under the Paris Agreement by increasing biofuel consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating commercial opportunities in the fuel market. The policy also focuses on supporting national energy security, incentivizing producers, and establishing a carbon credit market called CBIO.

Social life cycle assessment of feedstocks for biodiesel production in Brazil

Marina Weyl Costa et al.

Summary: This study assesses the social impacts of biodiesel production in Brazil and proposes a scoring method. The results reveal the positive influence of cooperatives on workers' well-being, with workers in wealthier regions enduring longer work hours and receiving higher salaries compared to those in poverty-stricken regions. The study also identifies correlations between sex, race, workload, and salary, highlighting the existence of social inequalities among the populations involved in biodiesel production.

Exergy, energy, and emissions analyses of binary and ternary blends of seed waste biodiesel of tomato, papaya, and apricot in a diesel engine

Rahim Karami et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of binary and ternary blends of tomato, papaya, and apricot seed biodiesels on the energy and exergy balance as well as emissions on a compression ignition diesel engine. The results show potential environmental advantages of different blends in terms of energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

Supplementing wastewater with NPK fertilizer as a cheap source of nutrients in cultivating live food (Chlorella vulgaris)

Kulwa Mtaki et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of aquaculture wastewater supplemented with NPK as a cheap source of nutrient for cultivating Chlorella vulgaris. It was found that growing C. vulgaris in AWW + 1.0 NPK medium resulted in the highest biomass productivity. The microalgae grown in AWW + 1.0 NPK also showed good vitamin and mineral content compared to the expensive BBM medium.

Research on a Solar Hybrid Trigeneration System Based on Exergy and Exergoenvironmental Assessments

Eduardo J. C. Cavalcanti et al.

Summary: The environmental performance of a combined cooling, heating, and power system was analyzed using a SPECO-based exergoenvironmental analysis. The highest total environmental impact rate was related to the internal combustion engine, with pollutant formation being the primary source of environmental impact. Solar-assisted trigeneration system decreased the environmental impact per exergy unit of chilled water by 10.99%, and further improvements can be made by enhancing the exergy efficiency and employing a treatment to remove nitrogen oxides.

On the consideration of different dead states in the exergy assessment of a solar-assisted combined cooling, heat and power system

Eduardo J. C. Cavalcanti et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a solar-assisted trigeneration system for residential consumer center, considering different dead state temperatures in the exergy assessment. It found that the COP of the absorption system increases with the temperature of the heat source, and there is a slight decrease in the exergy efficiency of the engine and solar system with the increase of dead state temperature. The analysis of dead state temperatures is useful for exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analyses.
