Nurse shrubs influence plant biodiversity across environmental gradients in rocky outcrops and surrounding rangelands

Fahime Rafiee et al.

Summary: The presence of nurse plants plays a critical role in preserving plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops, outweighing the effects of abiotic factors. However, in surrounding rangelands, nurse plants have a negative impact on plant biodiversity. These findings highlight the importance of nurse plants in maintaining plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops.

Decoupling the impact of biodiversity and environmental factors on the biomass and biomass growth of trees in subtropical forests

Ravi Mohan Tiwari et al.

Summary: This study aimed to disentangle the relationship between different aspects of biodiversity and biomass or biomass change in subtropical forest plots in Zhejiang Province, China. The results showed that taxonomic and functional diversity were significantly correlated with biomass and biomass growth, while phylogenetic diversity was not. Furthermore, there was a positive linear relationship between biomass or biomass growth and mean annual temperature and altitude. These results suggest that the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning depends on the diversity index and environmental conditions.

Plant-plant interactions determine taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity in severe ecosystems

Maral Bashirzadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that nurse plants have a positive impact on the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of alpine communities, as well as the functional and phylogenetic diversity of dryland communities. Nurse plants have the largest effects on biodiversity in moderate environmental conditions, which suggests their potential to protect biodiversity from the impacts of climate change in the future.

Mapping South America's Drylands through Remote Sensing-A Review of the Methodological Trends and Current Challenges

Khalil Ali Ganem et al.

Summary: The scientific understanding of land use and land cover changes in South America's drylands is limited. This paper reviewed existing mapping initiatives and identified knowledge gaps and challenges. Remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms were commonly used, but detailed mapping of dryland vegetation types was lacking. Further research is needed to enhance multi-level studies in dryland vegetation mapping.

Changes in plant biodiversity facets of rocky outcrops and their surrounding rangelands across precipitation and soil gradients

Fahime Rafiee et al.

Summary: Climate and soil factors have significant controls over plant biodiversity in stressful ecosystems. This study examined the simultaneous effects of precipitation and soil gradients on taxonomic and functional diversity in rocky outcrops and rangelands in Iran. The results showed that soil factors had a more consistent and significant impact on plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops, while precipitation factors explained more variation in surrounding rangelands. This study highlights the importance of soil factors in shaping plant biodiversity in stressful ecosystems.

Plant-plant interactions determine natural restoration of plant biodiversity over time, in a degraded mined land

Maral Bashirzadeh et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of two dominant nurse plants on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in a limestone mine site in Iran. The results showed that nurse plants had positive effects on biodiversity, with a larger contribution than land abandonment age. These findings highlight the importance of plant-plant interactions in restoring vegetation.

Network motifs involving both competition and facilitation predict biodiversity in alpine plant communities

Summary: The study found that patterns of positive and negative associations among species in alpine plant populations have a positive impact on species diversity globally, contributing to the persistence of local communities. This highlights the importance of competition and facilitation in maintaining biodiversity.

Low spatial autocorrelation in mountain biodiversity data and model residuals

Mathieu Chevalier et al.

Summary: Spatial autocorrelation (SAC) is a common feature of ecological data, but its impact on species distribution models (SDMs) remains controversial. This study in the western Swiss Alps found that SAC levels in biodiversity data were low overall and disappeared rapidly at a distance of approximately 5-10 km. Model residuals were not spatially autocorrelated, suggesting that inferences from SDMs are unlikely to be affected by SAC.
