Diversity and composition of plants species along elevational gradient: research trends

Ram Sharan Dani et al.

Summary: Studies on species richness patterns along elevation gradients have been conducted to estimate the patterns and determinants of species richness. More than half of the studies found unimodal hump-shaped richness patterns, followed by a monotonic decline, in different plant taxa. Both hemispheres showed similar patterns of species richness. Some taxa showed bimodality or multi-model patterns. The mid-domain effect and elevation range influenced the patterns. More regional research focusing on specific taxa and factors is needed.

Rainforest conversion to plantations fundamentally alters energy fluxes and functions in canopy arthropod food webs

Melanie M. Pollierer et al.

Summary: Tropical rainforests are turning into cash crop agricultural systems, leading to massive losses of plant and animal species and changes in arthropod food webs and energy fluxes. Conversion to rubber and oil palm plantations results in a significant reduction in energy fluxes and shifts in trophic groups. These changes highlight the degradation of animal-driven functions and restructuring of canopy food webs.

Elevation and local habitat characteristics jointly determine soil oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida) assemblages in the Changbai Mountains, China

Dandan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity and community structure of soil oribatid mites in different vegetation zones of the Changbai Mountains. The results showed significant differences in community composition and diversity among vegetation zones, but not among habitats. Soil pH was identified as the main factor influencing oribatid mite diversity.

Elevation, aspect, and slope influence woody vegetation structure and composition but not species richness in a human-influenced landscape in northwestern Yunnan, China

Zhongqian Cheng et al.

Summary: Elevation, aspect, and slope have similar influences on woody vegetation structure in both protected and human-influenced forested mountain areas. However, intense forest usage at lower elevations and on southern and western slopes, combined with aridity, restricts tree size and aboveground biomass (AGB), which may be challenged by climate change.

Ecological and evolutionary processes shape below-ground springtail communities along an elevational gradient

Zhijing Xie et al.

Summary: Both elevational gradients and environmental factors play important roles in shaping the assembly and species divergence of soil detritivores in Changbai Mountain. The diversity of below-ground communities in this region mainly relies on the persistence of old phylogenetic lineages, with recent speciation being less important.

The isotopic signature of the arthropod rain in a temperate forest

Oksana L. Rozanova et al.

Summary: The forest canopy is populated by various organisms and when they fall down, they form arthropod rain. We found that the arthropod rain has different isotope composition compared to soil-dwelling animals, and this difference can help us understand its contribution to the detrital food webs. The low isotope values of the arthropod rain are mainly driven by wingless microhytophages and macrophytophages. Winged arthropods have similar isotope composition to soil-dwelling invertebrates, and there is no consistent difference between saprophages and predators among winged insects in the arthropod rain.

Drivers of Collembola assemblages along an altitudinal gradient in northeast China

Zhijing Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diversity and community composition of Collembola along altitudinal gradients in Changbai Mountain. The results suggest that altitude, local habitat-related factors, and climatic variables are important drivers of changes in Collembola communities. Specifically, soil and litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and soil pH have positive correlations with Collembola communities at different altitudes.

The results highlight the potentially major consequences of land-use change for the functioning of arboreal arthropod food webs.

Mid-elevational Peaks in Diversity of Ground-dwelling Arthropods with High Species Turnover on the Colorado Plateau

Derek Uhey et al.

Summary: Research along elevational gradients in northern Arizona revealed that ground-dwelling arthropods show peak diversity at mid-elevations, with abundance, richness, and diversity indexes peaking in this region. Community composition varies significantly across the gradient, driven by shifts from ants dominating low to mid elevations, and beetles dominating high elevations. Population turnover is high among sites, suggesting vulnerability to environmental change, especially at lower elevations in arid regions.

A multi-faceted comparative perspective on elevational beta-diversity: the patterns and their causes

Yuanbao Du et al.

Summary: This study found that in terms of elevational beta-diversity, species turnover has a greater impact on altitudinal patterns, while the nestedness process is more important in terms of trait dissimilarity. Taxonomic turnover is relatively higher than its phylogenetic and functional analogues, whereas nestedness-resultant trait dissimilarity tends to be higher than the taxonomic and phylogenetic measures. As elevational distance increases, the conflicting dynamics of environmental filtering and limiting similarity jointly influence the elevational patterns of beta-diversity.

β diversity among ant communities on fragmented habitat islands: the roles of species trait, phylogeny and abundance

Yuhao Zhao et al.

Summary: The study assessed beta diversity of ant assemblages on island fragments in the Thousand Island Lake, China, finding that taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover components dominated overall beta diversity, while functional turnover and nestedness components contributed equally. Overall beta diversity increased with increasing isolation and inter-island distance, but abundance-weighted overall beta diversity decreased with increasing island size. These results suggest that dispersal limitation and functional redundancy may play a role in shaping beta diversity patterns in fragmented habitats.
