Summary: We used accelerated molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of two Cu(II) ions binding to alpha-Synuclein. The binding of Cu(II) ions to the N-terminal and C-terminal regions of the peptide decreased its size and flexibility, while creating new contacts within and between the N-terminus and non-A beta component (NAC). Furthermore, the binding of Cu(II) ions induced changes in the peptide's secondary structure pattern, promoting the formation of more beta-strands and hairpins.

Summary: Heavy metal concentrations were evaluated in the Pila globosa tissues and the adjacent aquatic environment of the Kole wetland agroecosystem in southwest coast of India. The study found that P. globosa tissues had higher concentrations of heavy metals compared to the aquatic environment, highlighting their potential for bioaccumulation. The study also identified agro-pesticides and fertilizers as the likely sources of heavy metal contamination, and revealed potential health risks to both humans and migratory birds.

Summary: Industrial wastewater containing heavy metals, nutrients, and soluble salts can cause eutrophication in water bodies. Microalgae biomass has the potential to produce various valuable products, but the high production cost and sensitivity of cultivation parameters limit its global output. Combining microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment, particularly in photobioreactors, can reduce operating costs. However, there is a limited amount of research on using industrial wastewater for microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors. Therefore, optimizing cultivation parameters using industrial wastewater in photobioreactors is crucial.

Summary: The impact of glutaric anhydride (GA) and succinic anhydride (SA) on the surface modification of microfibrillated cellulose was investigated. Both anhydrides successfully introduced carboxylate functional groups on the cellulose surface. GA showed a DS of 1.5 ± 0.2 mmol of carboxylic acid/g of cellulose, while SA had a DS of 3.5 ± 0.2 mmol of carboxylic acid/g of cellulose. The results suggested that GA can serve as a safer and greener alternative to SA for the carboxylation of cellulose.

Summary: By testing the spontaneous combustion process of coal, the ignition temperature of coal was accurately determined, and the kinetics and thermodynamics before and after the ignition temperature were calculated. It was found that the coal changed slowly before the ignition temperature and surged sharply after the ignition temperature. The coal at the ignition temperature was in thermodynamic equilibrium, while when the temperature was higher than the ignition temperature, the coal entered an irreversible combustion stage.

Summary: Treating heavy-metal pollution in industrial wastewater is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. Current methods, such as adsorption and chemical precipitation, have limitations in terms of cost and removal efficiency. This study developed a new method using conductive biochar electrodes for electrochemical deposition. The results showed high removal efficiency of cadmium ions from wastewater, and the separated electrode could be recycled after acid pickling. This research provides a simple and clean approach for treating cadmium-containing wastewater, reducing the cost of heavy-metal treatment, and has significant research and industrial implications.

Summary: In this study, microorganisms with high resistance to lead ions were isolated and evaluated for their efficiency in removing lead ions from wastewater through biosorption. The optimized conditions for biosorption of Pb (II) were determined, and the biosorption efficiency and capacity of the isolated Brevibacillus strain were analyzed. Surface characterization and analysis of key functional groups involved in biosorption were conducted. The results showed that the biomass of Brevibacillus can be used as a promising biosorbent for the removal of metals, including lead, from wastewater.

Summary: This study demonstrates that surface enhanced infrared and Raman spectroscopies provide similar data on strongly binding surfaces, but probe different subpopulations of adsorbates on weakly adsorbing surfaces. The lack of scaling between derivatives of the dipole moment and the polarizability explains the different responses of infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The competitive adsorption of water on weak binding metals might contribute to the differences in infrared and Raman responses among metal surfaces. It is also found that only copper sites capable of adsorbing carbon monoxide in an atop configuration visible to surface enhanced infrared spectroscopy are active in the electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction reaction.

Summary: In this study, a palladium catalyst loaded on a hydrogen storage support-Pd/LaNi5 was synthesized and its catalytic property in reversible hydrogen storage of N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) was investigated. The results showed that the catalytic performance of 1 wt%Pd/LaNi5 was significantly better than that of Pd/Al2O3 with the same Pd loading. This improvement was attributed to the ample lattice hydrogen bonding sites and fast bulk hydrogen diffusion kinetics of LaNi5.
