Alleviation of substrate inhibition in an anaerobic ammonia oxidation reactor: Recovery process performance and microbial community

Genwang Chang et al.

Summary: Substrate inhibition is a major threat to the stability of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) reactors. This study focused on the recovery process and microbial community changes in anammox reactors after inhibition. The results showed that reducing the ratio of influent NO2-N to NH4+-N promoted rapid recovery of the anammox system, and biofilms played a crucial role in resisting reactor destabilization.

Enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency and anammox metabolism in microbial electrolysis cell coupled anammox through different voltage application

Anran Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different applying voltage methods on substrate removal efficiency and rates, microbial community structure, anammox metabolism and metabolic pathways were investigated using microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) coupled with anammox. The results showed that applying voltage improved NH4+-N removal efficiency and rates, electron transfer efficiency, key enzyme activity, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion. Step-up voltage promoted the growth of Candidatus_Kuenenia, facilitating the rapid start-up of anammox and treatment of low ammonia concentration wastewater.

Selecting suitable seed sludge for anammox enrichment: Role of influent characteristics and reactor operational conditions

Radhika Deore et al.

Summary: The study investigated the suitability of three different sludge collected from diverse environments for anammox process establishment. The microbial community in the seed sludge was studied, and it was found that anammox bacteria were present only in the seed sludge treating high NH4+-N wastewater. The abundance of anammox and denitrifying bacteria in the seed sludge was influenced by the influent NH4+-N, NO3--N, and organic carbon concentrations, which in turn impacted the anammox start-up.

Partnering of anammox and denitrifying bacteria benefits anammox's recovery from starvation and complete nitrogen removal

Qingkun Wang et al.

Summary: The cooperative metabolic activity between anammox and denitrifying bacteria can accelerate the recovery of anammox and reduce nitrate production. This study showed that denitrifying bacteria consumed microbial products and synthesized poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate, creating a favorable environment for anammox bacteria growth and enhancing nitrogen removal.

XiaoTong Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the morphological structure, properties, microbial community and function of anammox biofilms induced by different carriers in low-strength wastewater. The study found that different types of carriers had different effects on biomass accumulation and agglomeration, and exhibited different cross-metabolism. In addition, the study identified the carrier structure as a key factor in generating uniform development and central development models.

Rapid start-up strategy of partial denitrification and microbially driven mechanism of nitrite accumulation mediated by dissolved organic matter

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fast start-up of Partial denitrification (PD) by analyzing the microbially driven mechanism of nitrite accumulation mediated by Dissolved organic matter (DOM). The strategy of feeding lower nitrate concentration and removing the idle period resulted in a high nitrite transformation ratio and effluent nitrate removal within 17 days. Enhanced nitrite accumulation was linked to decreased utilization of aliphatic DOM during nitrite reduction process.

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.
