Oxytocin enhances progesterone production with upregulation of BMP-15 activity by granulosa cells

Koichiro Yamamoto et al.

Summary: The reproductive role of oxytocin (OXT) in ovarian steroidogenesis and its interaction with bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) were investigated using rat and human granulosa cells. OXT treatment increased progesterone production in response to FSH and FSK in both cells, while not affecting estradiol production. OXT also enhanced the phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/9 and the transcription of ID1 induced by BMP-15, but not by BMP-6, in human granulosa cells. Overall, OXT accelerates ovarian progesterone synthesis by upregulating BMP-15 activity, thus fine-tuning ovarian steroidogenesis.

Neuropeptides as regulators of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis activity and their putative roles in stress-induced fertility disorders

Milosz Golyszny et al.

Summary: This article reviews the direct or indirect effects of neuropeptides on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and discusses their role in stress-induced infertility. The reviewed literature suggests that neuropeptides may contribute to new pathophysiological mechanisms leading to fertility disturbances induced by stress.

Intrafollicular Concentrations of the Oocyte-secreted Factors GDF9 and BMP15 Vary Inversely in Polycystic Ovaries

Stine Gry Kristensen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in concentrations of GDF9, BMP15, and the GDF9/BMP15 heterodimer in follicle fluids from women with and without polycystic ovaries (PCO). The results showed that GDF9 levels were significantly higher in women with PCO, while BMP15 levels were significantly lower, resulting in an increased GDF9/BMP15 ratio. This aberrant endocrine environment may serve as a new biomarker for PCO.

The Biology of Vasopressin

Samantha Sparapani et al.

Summary: Vasopressins play crucial roles in mammals as hormones regulating antidiuretic and cardiovascular functions, as well as in the central nervous system modulating social behavior and stress responses. The synthesis and release of vasopressin are tightly regulated by various factors, and abnormalities in its signaling have been linked to certain diseases.
