Hyaluronic Acid as a Modern Approach in Anticancer Therapy-Review

Monika Michalczyk et al.

Summary: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an important component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is involved in various biological functions, including embryonic development, healing, inflammation, and cancerogenesis. This review highlights the metabolism and interactions of HA with its binding proteins, such as CD44 and RHAMM, and their implications in cancer development. The presence of HA on tumor cells is associated with a poor prognosis, and studying HA in cancer-free naked mole rats provides insights into its role in malignancy.

Hyaluronic acid-based multifunctional carriers for applications in regenerative medicine: A review

Chuanfeng An et al.

Summary: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally derived carbohydrate polymer with diverse biological functions and superior properties. HA hydrogels have been widely used for biomedical applications due to their network homogeneity, degradation profile, permeability, and injectability. This review summarizes the recent progress in the preparation and applications of HA microgels, including different crosslinking/polymerization schemes and miniaturized fabrication techniques. The use of HA-based microgels in regenerative medicine, such as cartilage repair, bioactive delivery, diagnostic imaging, and modular tissue engineering, is also highlighted. Challenges and future perspectives in utilizing HA-based microgels in regenerative medicine are discussed.

The development and evaluation of hyaluronic acid coated mitochondrial targeting liposomes for celastrol delivery

Simeng Xiao et al.

Summary: A novel multistage-targeted celastrol delivery system (C-TL/HA) was developed by electrostatic binding of hyaluronic acid (HA) to celastrol-loaded cationic liposomes. The study showed that C-TL/HA successfully delivered celastrol into mitochondria, activated apoptosis of mitochondrial pathway, and exhibited higher tumor inhibition efficiency and lower toxic side effects compared with free celastrol. The HA coating not only improved stability and safety in vivo, but also enhanced drug uptake and tumor targeting through recognition of CD44 receptors.

Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Chiral FA Conjugated CdTe/CdS Quantum Dots for Selective Cancer Ablation

Guangmin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, chiral ligand-conjugated quantum dots were fabricated for inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. The circular dichroism signals of chiral quantum dots were found to effectively distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. The experimental results demonstrated the significant apoptosis-inducing ability of the chiral quantum dots and their potential as targeted anti-cancer agents.

Hyaluronic-Acid-Tagged Cubosomes Deliver Cytotoxics Specifically to CD44-Positive Cancer Cells

Arindam Pramanik et al.

Summary: Delivery of chemotherapy drugs specifically to cancer cells raises local drug doses in tumors and therefore kills more cancer cells while reducing side effects in other tissues, thereby improving oncological and quality of life outcomes. Cubosomes, liquid crystalline lipid nanoparticles, are potential vehicles for delivery of chemotherapy drugs.

An Enzyme-Engineered Nonporous Copper(I) Coordination Polymer Nanoplatform for Cuproptosis-Based Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Yuzhi Xu et al.

Summary: Cuproptosis, a copper-dependent form of regulated cell death, offers great opportunities for cancer treatment. In this study, a glucose oxidase (GOx)-engineered nonporous copper(I) 1,2,4-triazolate ([Cu(tz)]) coordination polymer (CP) nanoplatform, denoted as GOx@[Cu(tz)], is developed for starvation-augmented cuproptosis and photodynamic synergistic therapy. In vivo experimental results show its effectiveness in inhibiting tumor growth.

Metabolic intervention liposome for targeting glutamine-addiction of breast cancer

Ming Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dual inhibition of metabolic plasticity in breast cancer cells using Lip@GOx&Tel, which targeted and inhibited two nutrient supply mechanisms. This led to a reduction in ATP production and biosynthesis precursors necessary for tumor growth, resulting in anti-tumor effects. Additionally, Lip@GOx&Tel disrupted redox homeostasis, further enhancing the therapeutic effect. The study also addressed the limitation of combining protein drugs and small molecule drugs in vivo by using liposome nanoparticles. Overall, this work provides a new perspective in nanomedicine for metabolic intervention in diseases.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
