A machine learning approach for classifying and quantifying acoustic diversity

Sara C. Keen et al.

Summary: This study presents a generalizable method to automate the calculation and quantification of acoustic diversity using an unsupervised random forest framework. Researchers can apply this tool to classify acoustic structure, estimate repertoire size, and compare the distribution and diversity of signals in acoustic space in a standardized way.

The Evolution of Human Vocal Emotion

Gregory A. Bryant

Summary: Vocal affect is a subcomponent of emotion programs that coordinate various physiological and psychological systems. Emotional vocalizations are shaped by evolution to solve adaptive social communication problems, utilizing a suite of vocal behaviors with acoustics explicable by their communicative functions. Variability in vocal emotion among societies is expected according to culturally evolved pragmatic rules, while universals in vocal production and perception exist where form-function relationships are present.
