The Diagnostic Performance of an Extended Ultrasound Protocol in Patients With Clinically Suspected Giant Cell Arteritis

Johan Skoog et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of an extended ultrasound protocol in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis (GCA). The results showed that color duplex ultrasound examination had high accuracy in diagnosing both cranial and extra-cranial GCA. Including examination of brachiocephalic and common carotid arteries increased the sensitivity without affecting the specificity. The extended CDU protocol allowed measurement of the general burden of inflammation, which could be relevant for future monitoring purposes.

Diagnostic accuracy of vascular ultrasound in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis (EUREKA): a prospective, multicentre, non-interventional, cohort study

Stavros Chrysidis et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that vascular ultrasound, when conducted by systematically trained ultrasonographers using appropriate equipment and settings, might effectively replace temporal artery biopsy as a first-line diagnostic method in patients suspected of having giant cell arteritis. The sensitivity of ultrasound diagnosis of giant cell arteritis was found to be 94% and the specificity was 84%. Logistic regression analysis confirmed ultrasound as the strongest baseline predictor for a clinically confirmed diagnosis of giant cell arteritis at 6 months.

18F-FDG PET/CT compared with ultrasound and biopsy for detection of vasculitis of the temporal artery branches

Christof Rottenburger et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that temporal artery PET/CT has high accuracy in diagnosing GCA, but it has lower sensitivity for the parietal branch. PET/CT and ultrasound have comparable diagnostic accuracy, serving as complementary tests for GCA diagnosis.
