Late Pleistocene evolution of Robe Range, southern Australia - The timing and carbonate source dynamics of coastal dune development

Rahmadi Hidayat et al.

Summary: Robe Range is a coastal barrier in southern Australia that preserves one of the longest records of Quaternary eolian dune deposition. The development of dunes in this barrier is linked to high sea levels during warm interstadials of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5. Amino acid racemization analysis and optically stimulated luminescence dating reveal that dune formation occurred during MIS 5c-a and early MIS 3. The barrier successions have complex sediment sources, derived from inner shelf carbonate factories and older marine successions. The topography of offshore shelves allows wind-driven transport of carbonate sand to onshore coastal dunes during lower sea levels, influenced by the availability of biogenic particles and wind regimes during the late Pleistocene interstadials.

On a ∼210 t Caribbean coastal boulder: The huracanolito seaward of the ruins of the Bucanero resort, Juragua, Oriente, Cuba

Kevin Pedoja et al.

Summary: Coastal boulder deposits (CBDs), also known as huracanolitos in Cuba, are formed along rocky shores due to storms, tropical cyclones, or tsunamis. This study presents data on CBDs along the shores of the Cuban Archipelago, focusing on the largest CBD ever described on Cuba Island. The results suggest that this CBD was emplaced by a tropical cyclone, indicating the potential for marine flooding exceeding that caused by major hurricanes in recent decades on Cuba's south coast.

Storm or tsunamis: Boulder deposits on the rocky coasts of the Balearic Islands (Spain)

Francesc Xavier Roig-Munar et al.

Summary: This study examines the origin of large coastal boulders at the edge of cliffs in the Balearic Islands. The results show that these boulders are most likely caused by storm waves and tsunamis. Numerical simulations and historical records support this conclusion. The boulders were found to have been formed between 1591 CE and 1894 CE, based on radiocarbon dating.

Late Pleistocene interstadial sea-levels (MIS 5a) in Gulf St Vincent, southern Australia, constrained by amino acid racemization dating of the benthic foraminifer Elphidium macelliforme

Colin Murray-Wallace et al.

Summary: This study focuses on accurately defining palaeosea-levels during Late Pleistocene interstadials, using sediment records from a stable, remote far-field setting in southern Australia. Analysis of amino acid racemization in foraminifer Elphidium macelliforme shows correlation with Marine Isotope Stages, highlighting its utility in geochronology. Foraminiferal faunal assemblages indicate millennial-scale sea level variability, consistent with records from other regions, suggesting Sub-Milankovitch interstadial sea level variability noted in ice cores.
