Smoking cessation care during pregnancy: A qualitative exploration of midwives' challenging role

Anna Kalamkarian et al.

Summary: The majority of South Australian pregnant women who smoke do not quit during pregnancy, especially those living in socially disadvantaged areas. Understanding challenges in midwives' provision of smoking cessation care can help facilitate women's smoking cessation. Midwives perceived tensions, organizational barriers, scepticism, and opportunities in their ability to provide smoking cessation care. Providing midwives with resources and training can alleviate the sense of futility and improve their understanding of current practice guidelines.

Socioeconomic status and tobacco consumption: Analyzing inequalities in China, Ghana, India, Mexico, the Russian Federation and South Africa

Laura Rossouw

Summary: Globally, there has been a rapid rise in non-communicable diseases driven by changing lifestyle choices and health behaviors. The study provides empirical evidence of the inequality in tobacco consumption across wealth groups in six Low- and Middle-Income Countries, and identifies wealth, locality, and gender as major drivers of inequality. Targeted policies should focus on reducing wealth-related inequalities and high tobacco consumption rates among males to curb rising healthcare costs.
