Enhancement of Arctic surface ozone during the 2020-2021 winter associated with the sudden stratospheric warming

Yan Xia et al.

Summary: Surface ozone in the Arctic was significantly enhanced during the 2020-2021 winter after the onset of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). The enhanced ozone is primarily due to the strengthening of stratosphere-to-troposphere transport associated with SSW. The SSW also leads to positive anomalies in surface ozone in the northern midlatitudes, which are related to cold air outbreaks.

Climate change penalty and benefit on surface ozone: a global perspective based on CMIP6 earth system models

Prodromos Zanis et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of climate change on surface ozone from a global modeling perspective and finds that surface ozone concentrations are expected to decrease in regions remote from pollution sources due to global warming, while they may increase in regions close to pollution sources.

Concurrent hot extremes and high ultraviolet radiation in summer over the Yangtze Plain and their possible impact on surface ozone

Yan Xia et al.

Summary: Hot extremes and high surface UV radiation occur concurrently in the Yangtze Plain in summer, primarily due to the westward extension of the Western Pacific Subtropical High which leads to less clouds and more solar radiation. The study suggests that surface UV radiation may be dominated by cloud variations and hot extremes and high UV radiation may result in more surface ozone.

Evaluating Long-Term Variability of the Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex Simulated by CMIP6 Models

Siyi Zhao et al.

Summary: The present study evaluates the long-term changes in the position and strength of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex and compares simulations from CMIP6 models with the MERRA2 reanalysis dataset. The results show that while the CMIP6 models capture the spatial characteristics of the polar vortex well, they tend to underestimate its strength. The study also reveals an anticorrelation between the strength bias and area bias simulated by the CMIP6 models.

BCC-ESM1 Model Datasets for the CMIP6 Aerosol Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP)

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: BCC-ESM1 is the first version of the Beijing Climate Center's Earth System Model participating in CMIP6 and AerChemMIP projects, providing valuable outputs for atmospheric chemistry studies. Preliminary evaluations show that the model captures climate sensitivities within likely ranges, despite some biases in precipitation and a cooling bias in the past. The datasets have been archived and are accessible for further research.

Tropospheric ozone in CMIP6 simulations

Paul T. Griffiths et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the evolution of tropospheric ozone from 1850 to 2100 using CMIP6 data, finding that the models were able to reproduce key spatial, seasonal, and decadal variability and trends observed in the past several decades. The average model ensemble showed an increase in tropospheric ozone burden from 1850 to 2005-2014, with a projected further increase in the ssp370 experiment up to 2100.

Summary: The study indicates that despite inconsistencies in the direction of BDC trends between observations and models in the middle and upper stratosphere, the large uncertainty in observational trend estimates leaves room for compatibility.
