An Extreme Monsoonal Heavy Rainfall Event over Inland South China in June 2022: A Synoptic Causes Analysis

Wen-jian Deng et al.

Summary: An extreme monsoonal heavy rainfall event occurred in the interior of northern south China from June 13 to 21, 2022. The causes of this event were analyzed using regional meteorological stations and ERA5 reanalysis data. The rainfall was influenced by a dominant South Asian high near the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and a western Pacific subtropical high in the eastern part of the South China Sea. The event can be divided into two stages: frontal heavy rainfall caused by cold air convergence and warm-sector heavy rainfall caused by a South China Sea monsoonal low-level jet penetrating inland.

Analysis of Precipitation Anomaly and a Failed Prediction During the Dragon-boat Rain Period in 2022

Shao-rou Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the possible causes for the abnormally high precipitation in Guangdong during the dragon-boat rain period in 2022. It finds that the fluctuation of the 200-hPa westerly wind, as well as the presence of subtropical high and a shear line, contribute to the strong updraft and transport of moisture to Guangdong. Additionally, the study suggests that the SSTA of the tropical southeast Atlantic in spring may be a key indicator for heavy rainfall.

The Role of Tibetan Plateau-Indian Ocean Thermal Contrast in the Significant Increasing Precipitation over the Southern Tibetan Plateau in May after the Mid-1990s

Zhangqun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the interannual variation of Tibetan Plateau-Indian Ocean thermal contrast on southern TP precipitation in May and its changes in the mid-1990s. It is found that the southern TP precipitation is closely related to the TP-Indian Ocean thermal contrast, which could be represented by a thermal contrast index (TCI). The analysis reveals that the southern TP precipitation in May increases significantly after 1996. Meanwhile, the TCI also enhances notably.

Interdecadal Change in the Interannual Variation of the Western Edge of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High During Early Summer and the Influence of Tropical Sea Surface Temperature

Zhan Hong-yu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the interannual variability of the western edge of the western North Pacific subtropical high experienced an interdecadal decrease around 1990, mainly influenced by the different impacts of tropical sea surface temperature anomalies before and after 1990. The tropical sea surface temperature anomalies and relevant atmospheric circulation anomalies exhibit obvious interdecadal differences before and after 1990.

Physical Mechanism of Phased Variation of 2020 Extremely Heavy Meiyu in Middle and Lower Reaches of Yangtze River

Bao Yuan-yuan et al.

Summary: The Meiyu season in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in 2020 was characterized by early onset, late retreat, long duration, and a significant north-south swing rain belt. The study investigates the physical mechanism behind the phased variation by analyzing atmospheric circulation, the thermal effect of the Tibetan Plateau, sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA), and tropical convection. The findings show that the strength and position of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and the South Asian high (SAH), as well as the dynamics of blocking highs, influence the swing of the rain belt. The temperature anomalies in the Tibetan Plateau and the Yangtze River region, generated by warm advection transport, heat sources in the Tibetan Plateau, and the latent heat of condensation, contribute to the intensity and position of the WPSH and SAH. Real-time SSTA in the Indian Ocean has limited direct influence on the WPSH and Meiyu, but anomalies and phased evolution of SSTA in the South China Sea and tropical western Pacific affect the WPSH and Meiyu through tropical convection and heat sources. The presence of strong positive SSTA in the western equatorial Pacific is a critical factor for the prolonged Meiyu season in 2020, and the onset and retreat of Meiyu are closely related to positive SSTA and typhoons in the ocean east of the Philippines.

Typical Circulation Patterns and Associated Mechanisms for Persistent Heavy Rainfall Events over Yangtze-Huaihe River Valley during 1981-2020

Huijie Wang et al.

Summary: Persistent heavy rainfall events over the Yangtze-Huaihe River Valley from 1981 to 2020 are classified into three types, showing different synoptic features and circulation patterns; in 2020, the composite synoptic circulation of the rainfall events generally aligns with their corresponding types, while the positions of South Asian high and Western Pacific subtropical high vary; water vapor and cold air conveyor belts are influenced by multiple factors, with the westward extension of the WPSH potentially causing the disruption of one of the conveyor belts.

Links between the thermal condition of the Tibetan Plateau in summer and atmospheric circulation and climate anomalies over the Eurasian continent

Sulan Nan et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of the thermal condition of the troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau on the atmospheric circulation and climate over the Eurasian continent. The higher temperature over the Tibetan Plateau leads to anomalous temperature gradients and wind patterns across the Eurasian continent. This leads to various climate phenomena, including anomalous anticyclonic circulations, changes in solar radiation, and enhancements in the East Asian summer monsoon. Sensitivity experiments using an atmospheric model confirm the influence of the tropospheric heating over the Tibetan Plateau on the atmospheric circulation over Eurasia.

Toward Understanding the Extreme Floods over Yangtze River Valley in June-July 2020: Role of Tropical Oceans

Shaolei Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the extreme floods in the Middle/Lower Yangtze River Valley during June-July 2020, finding a strong connection to an anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific and warm SST conditions in the tropical Indian Ocean. The multi-decadal warming trend and interannual variability of the Indian Ocean SSTs had positive impacts on the extreme floods.

Warming amplification over the Arctic Pole and Third Pole: Trends, mechanisms and consequences

Qinglong You et al.

Summary: This study compares the trends, mechanisms, and consequences of warming amplification over the Arctic Pole and Third Pole, noting that both regions have experienced significant warming rates exceeding the global average. While Arctic amplification and Tibetan amplification are projected to continue, there is currently no consensus on the dominant mechanisms driving these patterns.
