Analysis of the meteorological impact on PM2.5 pollution in Changchun based on KZ filter and WRF-CMAQ

Chunsheng Fang et al.

Summary: This study used the KZ filter and WRF-CMAQ model to quantitatively evaluate the relative impact of anthropogenic emission control and meteorological conditions on the decline in PM2.5 concentration in Changchun. The results indicate that anthropogenic emission control played a major role in the decline of PM2.5, while the impact of meteorological conditions was relatively limited.

Impacts of Urban Expansion on the Urban Thermal Environment: A Case Study of Changchun, China

Yang Limin et al.

Summary: The study found that Changchun City experienced urban expansion from 2000 to 2020, resulting in an increase in urban heat island effect, with positive linear correlation between built-up density and land surface temperature (LST) during both day and night. Rapid urbanization led to a significant increase in mean LST in newly urbanized areas, while having weak effects on daytime LST change in existing urban areas. Urban expansion also influenced the spatial heterogeneity of LST in existing urban areas.

The Impact of Central Heating on the Urban Thermal Environment Based on Multi-Temporal Remote Sensing Images

Xinran Chen et al.

Summary: Research on the impact of anthropogenic heat discharge in a thermal environment is significant in climate change research. This study investigated the impact of central heating on the thermal environment in Shenyang, Changchun, and Harbin using remote sensing technology. The results showed a significant increase in the equivalent heat island areas at night, which was positively correlated with the central heating supply. These findings provide important insights for future studies on urban thermal environment changes.

Impact of Urbanization on Meteorology and Air Quality in Chengdu, a Basin City of Southwestern China

Haofan Wang et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has significant impacts on energy budget and urban air quality. This study simulated a severe O-3 pollution episode and a highly polluted PM2.5 episode to assess the effects of urbanization on meteorological phenomena and air pollutants. The findings show that urbanization leads to increased nocturnal temperature and decreased daytime temperature in the urban expansion area, as well as changes in ventilation index. These changes influence the concentrations of PM2.5 and O-3.

Air pollutant emissions induced by rural-to-urban migration during China's urbanization (2005-2015)

Guang Shi et al.

Summary: China's rapid urbanization has led to population migration from rural to urban regions, resulting in increased air pollutant emissions, particularly in terms of NOx, SO2, and primary PM2.5. The widening gap between urban and rural investment and consumption is the main cause of the increase in migration-induced emissions, while the decrease in emission intensity plays a significant role in reducing emissions. Although urbanization currently poses additional environmental pressure, the reconciliation of urbanization and air quality improvement is possible through updated policies.

Quantitative Identification of Temporal-Spatial Variations of Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effects in Changchun, China

Ziqi Chen et al.

Summary: With rapid urbanization, the urban heat island (UHI) effect is becoming more pronounced. This study focuses on identifying and evaluating the temporal-spatial variations and driving factors of UHI in Changchun city, Jilin province, in Northeast China. By utilizing satellite images and ancillary data, this study analyzes the variations of UHI effect over time and space, as well as its relation with urban development. The findings reveal the temporal variations of UHI based on air temperature and the spatial variations of UHI based on land surface temperature. The study emphasizes the importance of urban land planning for mitigating UHI effect and promoting sustainable urban development.

Spatiotemporal variations and potential sources of tropospheric formaldehyde over eastern China based on OMI satellite data

Jiachen Fan et al.

Summary: The eastern region of China is an important economic hinterland and energy region, but rapid economic development has led to increased volatile organic compound emissions and high-concentration formaldehyde accumulation. Using data from the OMI satellite, this article discusses the spatial and temporal characteristics of formaldehyde in eastern China from 2009 to 2018, highlighting the higher concentrations in regions with intense human activities. The study also examines the contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to formaldehyde emissions, emphasizing the need to address both plant emissions and human activities to improve regional air quality.

Assessing the effects of 2D/3D urban morphology on the 3D urban thermal environment by using multi-source remote sensing data and UAV measurements: A case study of the snow-climate city of Changchun, China

Chaobin Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the influence of 2D urban morphology on vertical temperature was stronger than that of 3D at heights below 30 meters, but the opposite was true at heights above 30 meters. Increasing building height can reduce LST in residential areas but increase it in industrial zones. Models using both 2D and 3D metrics performed better in explaining LST and 3D thermal environments than those using either alone, especially in residential areas.

Impact of urban morphology on the spatial and temporal distribution of PM2.5 concentration: A numerical simulation with WRF/CMAQ model in Wuhan, China

Huahua Xu et al.

Summary: This study uses Wuhan as an example to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of PM2.5 in the winter of 2015 through urban morphology indicators. The results show that building density and urban fraction have the most significant impact on PM2.5 concentration, with the highest concentration occurring during the morning rush hour. Increasing urban morphology indicators at night can decrease PM2.5 concentration, but during the daytime, increasing floor area ratio and building height will increase PM2.5 concentration.
