Spatio-temporal changes in the mean and extreme temperature indices for Serbia

Ivana Tosic et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed changes in mean and extreme temperature indices for Serbia from 1951 to 2020. It found a warming trend over the past 70 years, with the mean maximum temperatures experiencing more intense changes than the mean minimum temperatures. The study also identified increases in indices based on maximum temperature and minimum temperature, with the most significant increase observed in warm nights during the summer season. Correlation analysis revealed the positive correlation between warm temperature indices and the East Atlantic pattern, while the North Atlantic Oscillation had a weaker influence on temperature indices in Serbia.

Compound climate extremes in China: Trends, causes, and projections

Yifeng Yu et al.

Summary: Human society and ecosystems are more affected by climate extremes than by climate averages. Compound climate extremes, which arise from a combination of multiple climatic drivers, pose more severe risks. The influence of drivers for compound climate extremes is increasing under global warming. This study provides a comprehensive review of the definition, types, historical trends, projections, potential causes, and risks of compound climate extremes in China.

RecordTest: An R Package to Analyze Non-Stationarity in the Extremes Based on Record-Breaking Events

Jorge Castillo-Mateo et al.

Summary: The study of non-stationary behavior in the extremes is important in various fields. The R package RecordTest provides a useful framework for non-parametric analysis of non-stationary behavior in the extremes, based on the analysis of records. It offers functions that cover all the steps in this type of analysis and can be applied to various scenarios, as illustrated by the analysis of global warming on temperature extremes.

Observed trends in extreme temperature events over northern part of the Korean Peninsula during 1960-2019 and a comparative overview

Summary: The study aims to estimate the trend in extreme temperature events in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula from 1960 to 2019. Results show that hot weather frequency and nighttime warm events have experienced a larger increasing trend than those in the global land.

Trends in probabilities of temperature records in the non-stationary climate of South Africa

Charlotte M. McBride et al.

Summary: The study investigates the frequency of record-breaking high and low temperatures in South Africa from 1951 to 2019. It found that the frequency of these events has increased significantly, especially towards the end of the analysis period, mainly due to the acceleration of the warming trend.

Distribution-free changepoint detection tests based on the breaking of records

Jorge Castillo-Mateo

Summary: This study proposes three distribution-free statistics for the changepoint detection problem in record-breaking events. The statistics are based on CUSUM-type measurements using upper and/or lower record indicators. The study demonstrates the asymptotic Kolmogorov distribution of the CUSUM-type statistics using the functional central limit theorem. The methods are validated through a Monte Carlo study and applied to analyze the temperature time series in Madrid, Spain.

The Mediterranean climate change hotspot in the CMIP5 and CMIP6 projections

Josep Cos et al.

Summary: This study compares multiple models' projections of future climate change in the Mediterranean region, and finds that the region will face ongoing warming and declining precipitation. The temperature changes are more certain, with the strongest warming occurring in the summer. The changes in precipitation are more uncertain, but significant declines are projected in the summer.

Is it possible to fit extreme climate change indices together seamlessly in the era of accelerated warming?

Yizhak Yosef et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that choosing different base periods for percentile-based extreme temperature indices can significantly impact the trend magnitude, particularly amplifying negative trends in cold indices while diminishing positive trends in warm indices. The findings suggest that using percentile-based indices derived from different base periods may lead to unreliable conclusions about climate change trends, especially when analyzing data from the last few decades.

Seasonal temperature trends on the Spanish mainland: A secular study (1916-2015)

Dhais Pena-Angulo et al.

Summary: Seasonal mean values of maximum and minimum temperatures in the Spanish mainland showed an increasing trend during the 20th century, with variations among seasons and temperature levels. Different regions exhibited significant trends in Tmax and Tmin, with Tmin trends generally more widespread. The spatial and temporal differences in seasonal temperatures were hypothesized to be related to atmospheric advection and relief.

Disentangling dynamical and thermodynamical contributions to the record-breaking heatwave over Central Europe in June 2019

Peiqiang Xu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the relative roles of dynamics and thermodynamics in the central Europe heatwave varied over time, with thermodynamic changes favoring such events. Dynamical changes, on the other hand, acted oppositely. This fluctuation in relative contributions poses challenges in predicting heatwave behavior on a regional scale.

Record-breaking high temperature in Southern China in 2017 and influence from the middle-latitude trough over the East of Japan

Jianming Zhang et al.

Summary: In the summer of 2017, China experienced record-breaking high temperatures, with the southern regions playing a major role in contributing to this phenomenon. The intensification of the western part of the western Pacific subtropical high is identified as a key factor influencing the persistent heat events in southern China.

Contribution of climatic changes in mean and variability to monthly temperature and precipitation extremes

Karin van der Wiel et al.

Summary: Changes in the frequency of climate extremes are influenced by shifts in both mean climate and climate variability, with temperature extremes being more governed by mean climate warming and precipitation extremes responding more to changes in variability. Spatial variations play a significant role in the impact of extreme events, highlighting the importance of regional processes. The contributions of mean climate and variability to the probability ratio are independent of event threshold, magnitude of warming, and climate model.
