Multi-scale analysis of the impacts of meteorology and emissions on PM2.5 and O3 trends at various regions in China from 2013 to 2020 2. Key weather elements and emissions

Sunling Gong et al.

Summary: A multiscale analysis was conducted to investigate the impacts of large-scale circulation types and local-scale key weather elements on complex air pollutants in China. The study found that the increasing trends of O-3 in most Chinese cities were largely influenced by temperature and solar radiation, while the trends of PM2.5 were mainly contributed by emission reduction measures. The meteorology alone explained approximately 57-80% of the variations in O-3 levels and only 20-33% of the variations in PM2.5 levels. However, with the addition of emission surrogates in the regression model, the explanation percentage increased significantly for both O-3 and PM2.5.

Impacts of ENSO on wintertime PM2.5 pollution over China during 2014-2021

Biyin Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variations in PM2.5 concentrations in four megacity clusters of China during the winter season associated with four individual ENSO events. Results show that the wintertime PM2.5 concentrations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Fenwei Plain regions during El Nino years are higher than those during La Nina years, while PM2.5 concentrations decrease in El Nino relative to La Nina years in the Pearl River Delta region.

Dominant Anomalous Circulation Patterns of Tibetan Plateau Summer Climate Generated by ENSO-Forced and ENSO-Independent Teleconnections

Shuai Hu et al.

Summary: The interannual variability of Tibetan Plateau summer climate has significant impacts on both regional hydrological cycles and global climate. This study identifies four dominant modes of summertime large-scale circulation over the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas. These modes are associated with ENSO-forced, ENSO-independent, summer North Atlantic Oscillation, and circumglobal teleconnection patterns.

The asymmetric effect of different types of ENSO and ENSO Modoki on rainy season over the Yellow River basin, China

Mengjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the rainy season features in the Yellow River basin, China, and the influence of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on precipitation. The findings showed that the rainy season began and ended earliest in the southern region of the Yellow River basin, with increasing precipitation from northwest to southeast. Rainy-season precipitation also exhibited strong correlations with sea surface temperature in the Nino regions, and different ENSO phases had varying impacts on precipitation.

The asymmetric impacts of ENSO modoki on boreal winter climate over the Pacific and its rim

Linqiang He et al.

Summary: The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Modoki phenomenon significantly impacts regional climate, with asymmetrical climate anomalies observed in the boreal winter during the different phases of ENSO Modoki. The anomalies are mainly related to Walker circulation and Hadley circulation anomalies.

Independent ENSO and IOD impacts on rainfall extremes over Indonesia

Ari Kurniadi et al.

Summary: This study uses Generalized Extreme Value analysis to investigate the independent seasonal impacts of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) on rainfall extremes in Indonesia. The study finds that the impacts are strongest during dry seasons and weaker during wet seasons. ENSO and IOD can make extreme climate conditions drier or wetter in Indonesia.

ENSO Influence on Western European Summer and Fall Temperatures

Maialen Martija-Diez et al.

Summary: Studies show that the increase in global air temperatures leads to more frequent extreme events in regions like Europe, with the intensity of heatwaves potentially linked to interannual variability of mean temperature. ENSO has a nonlinear and nonstationary impact on temperatures in Western Europe, showing a change in seasonality over decades. Warmer conditions in Western European temperatures are significantly correlated to ENSO characteristics of previous seasons, suggesting a potential source for improving seasonal forecasts.

Statistical predictability of wintertime PM2.5 concentrations over East Asia using simple linear regression

Jaein I. Jeong et al.

Summary: The study reveals the impact of monsoons, ENSO, and other climate mechanisms on wintertime air quality in East Asia. Using a global 3-D chemical transport model, researchers found a strong correlation between PM2.5 concentrations and ENSO indices in Northeast Asia. A simple linear regression model was developed for predicting PM2.5 concentrations with high accuracy, especially in capturing abnormal variability in this region.

Recent Weakening of the Interannual Relationship between ENSO Modoki and Boreal Summer Tropical Cyclone Frequency over the Western North Pacific

Jinjie Song et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the impact of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Modoki on tropical cyclone (TC) formation over the western North Pacific has undergone decadal changes, with varying correlation strengths during different time periods. The differences in correlation strength are primarily attributed to changes in large-scale features related to ENSO Modoki among the three subperiods. Mid-level moisture and low-level vorticity were identified as key environmental variables influencing the relationship between ENSO Modoki and TC formation.

Intensified modulation of winter aerosol pollution in China by El Nino with short duration

Liangying Zeng et al.

Summary: El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a strong signal of interannual variability in the climate system, with periodic changes in sea surface temperature in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific Ocean. This study quantitatively examines the impacts of different durations of El Nino events on aerosol concentrations and haze days in China, revealing that short-duration El Nino events have a more significant influence on aerosol pollution in China compared to long-duration El Nino events.
