Connecting Chromospheric Condensation Signatures to Reconnection-driven Heating Rates in an Observed Flare

William H. Ashfield et al.

Summary: Observations of chromospheric condensation can indirectly characterize solar flare reconnection, but only represent a portion of the reconnection energy release and do not necessarily reflect the timescale of energy input. Developing a quantitative relationship between high-resolution observations of condensation response and reconnection dynamics is crucial for understanding the complex processes involved in solar flares.

Flares, Rotation, and Planets of the AU Mic System from TESS Observations

Emily A. Gilbert et al.

Summary: AU Mic is a young M dwarf star with photometric variability from spots and flares. The activity levels increase slightly from the first month of observation to 2 years later. The 20 s cadence data allows for better detection and analysis of flares compared to the 2 minute data. Transit timing variations are observed for AU Mic b, and three transits of AU Mic c are detected.

Simulating the Space Weather in the AU Mic System: Stellar Winds and Extreme Coronal Mass Ejections

Julian D. Alvarado-Gomez et al.

Summary: Two close-in planets have been recently discovered around the M-dwarf flare star AU Microscopii, making it an important system for studying atmospheric loss on exoplanets. Numerical modeling and simulations were conducted to investigate the stellar wind and coronal mass ejection events in this system. The results predict extreme space weather conditions for AU Mic and its planets, posing a significant challenge for the survival of exoplanetary atmospheres in this system.

One year of AU Mic with HARPS - II. Stellar activity and star-planet interaction

Baptiste Klein et al.

Summary: In this study, a spectroscopic analysis of the planet-hosting star AU Mic was conducted, revealing the radial velocity signals of its two close-in transiting planets. An independent measurement of the radial velocity semi-amplitude of AU Mic c was also performed, providing further insights into its unique properties. The study highlights the significant evolution of stellar magnetic activity and chromospheric variability.

Space-weather-driven Variations in Lyα Absorption Signatures of Exoplanet Atmospheric Escape: MHD Simulations and the Case of AU Mic b

Ofer Cohen et al.

Summary: We simulate the space environment and the interaction between the magnetized stellar wind and a planetary atmospheric outflow. We find that the Ly alpha absorption is highly variable due to the varying stellar wind conditions. The strong Doppler blueshift is likely attributed to the stellar wind rather than the escaping neutral atmosphere.

AU Microscopii in the Far-UV: Observations in Quiescence, during Flares, and Implications for AU Mic b and c

Summary: Researchers used the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to observe the young star AU Mic in the far-ultraviolet range. They identified emission features and calculated their energy contributions. They also detected occasional flares and observed a higher atmospheric mass loss rate during flare events. Finally, they modeled the transmission spectra of planets in the AU Mic system and suggested future observations with JWST.

X-ray flares of the young planet host Ds Tucanae A

I Pillitteri et al.

Summary: The discovery of planets around young stars has led to novel investigations into the early stages of planetary formation and evolution. X-ray and UV emissions from stars strongly affect the atmospheres of young planets orbiting around them. By observing the 40 million-year-old star DS Tuc A with XMM-Newton, two X-ray bright flares were recorded. These flares may be associated with coronal mass ejections and have significant impacts on the evaporation of the planet's atmosphere.

Simultaneous Multiwavelength Flare Observations of EV Lacertae

Rishi R. Paudel et al.

Summary: This study presents the initial results of simultaneous multiwavelength observations of flares on nearby active M dwarfs, where data from various observatories were used to obtain a comprehensive understanding of flare activity. The frequency distribution of flares observed by TESS and NICER showed similar slopes, while the UVOT flares had a shallower slope in comparison. Additionally, no conclusive evidence for the first ionization potential (FIP) or the inverse FIP effect during coronal flares on EV Lac was found.

New constraints on the planetary system around the young active star AU Mic: Two transiting warm Neptunes near mean-motion resonance

Summary: AU Mic is a young, active star with a detected transiting planet b, and newly observed potential planet c. Both planets are Neptune-size, in near 9:4 mean-motion resonance, with planet c likely to be inflated based on non-detection of significant transit-timing variations. The system presents a key opportunity for studying infant planet atmospheres and early stage planet-planet interactions.

Discovery of an Extremely Short Duration Flare from Proxima Centauri Using Millimeter through Far-ultraviolet Observations

Meredith A. MacGregor et al.

Summary: This study reports an extreme flaring event from Proxima Cen, which is the brightest ever detected in the millimeter and FUV bands. The millimeter and FUV continuum emission closely traces each other during the flare, suggesting that millimeter emission could be a proxy for FUV emission and a new tool in understanding the high-energy radiation environment of exoplanets. The optical emission associated with the event peaks at a lower level with a time delay, and the initial burst has a very short duration of less than 10 seconds, indicating that millimeter emission during stellar flares may often originate from short burst-like events.

Time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of M dwarf flare star YZ Canis Minoris with OISTER and TESS: Blue asymmetry in the H alpha line during the non-white light flare

Hiroyuki Maehara et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi within the OISTER collaborations during the TESS observation period. The study found a blue asymmetry in one of the H alpha flares associated with white-light flares on YZ CMi, suggesting upward flows of chromospheric cool plasma even without detectable red/near-infrared continuum brightening. Estimated mass and kinetic energy of the upward-moving material were comparable to expectations from empirical relations for stellar flares and solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The estimated kinetic energy for the non-white-light flare on YZ CMi was smaller than expected from the relation for solar CMEs, possibly due to differences in velocity between CMEs and prominence eruptions.
