Deducing neutron star equation of state parameters directly from telescope spectra with uncertainty-aware machine learning

Delaney Farrell et al.

Summary: Neutron stars serve as a unique laboratory to study matter in extreme conditions, and their X-ray emissions indirectly provide clues about the equation of state (EOS) of superdense nuclear matter. However, inferring the EOS from X-ray spectra is challenging due to systematic uncertainties. Our enhancements to the current state of the art include realistic uncertainty quantification and machine learning-based inference of physical properties without theoretical assumptions. We also propose a novel method to directly infer the EOS from high-dimensional spectra of observed stars, bypassing the intermediate mass-radius step.

Bayesian Nonparametric Inference of the Neutron Star Equation of State via a Neural Network

Ming-Zhe Han et al.

Summary: A new nonparametric method utilizing neural networks is developed to reconstruct the equation of state of neutron stars, successfully fitting theoretical EoS and analyzing real data to obtain posterior probabilities for radius and tidal deformability. Additionally, findings suggest the conformal limit may not always hold true in neutron stars' high-density regions.

Hadron-quark mixed phase in the quark-meson coupling model

Min Ju et al.

Summary: The study explores the formation of a structured hadron-quark mixed phase in neutron stars using the QMC model and energy minimization method, finding that finite-size effects play a crucial role in the hadron-quark phase transition. The research also suggests that hadron-quark pasta phases are formed in massive stars, but pure quark matter does not exist.
