Unbinned likelihood analysis for X-ray polarization

Denis Gonzalez-Caniulef et al.

Summary: We present a study of the unbinned, photon-by-photon likelihood technique for phase-dependent, X-ray spectro-polarimetric observations. By applying this technique to models of the X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1, we find that both the rotating vector model and the spectro-polarimetry model can reconstruct the geometric configuration angles of the accreting pulsar. However, the measured polarization fraction becomes biased unless the energy dispersion and effective area of the detector are taken into account. We also show that the unbinned technique yields smaller error bars compared to the binned technique.

Handling the Background in IXPE Polarimetric Data

Alessandro Di Marco et al.

Summary: Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a Small Explorer mission launched by NASA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana on December 9, 2021. It is dedicated to investigating X-ray polarimetry in the 2-8 keV energy band, allowing angular-, time-, and energy-resolved observations. IXPE consists of three telescopes with grazing-incidence mirrors and gas pixel detectors. This paper presents a guideline for optimal background selection and rejection strategy to improve polarimetric sensitivity based on IXPE observations, with a case study on the 4U 0142+61 magnetar.

IXPE detection of polarized X-rays from magnetars and photon mode conversion at QED vacuum resonance

Dong Lai

Summary: The recent observations of 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910 by IXPE have provided a new way to study magnetars, which are neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields. The polarized X-rays from 4U 0142+61 show a 90° linear polarization swing, which can be explained by photon polarization mode conversion at the vacuum resonance in the magnetar atmosphere. This suggests that the atmosphere of 4U 0142 is composed of partially ionized heavy elements and that the surface magnetic field is comparable to or less than 1014 G.

A Weighted Analysis to Improve the X-Ray Polarization Sensitivity of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer

Alessandro Di Marco et al.

Summary: Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a Small Explorer mission that measures the polarization of X-ray emission from astronomical sources. It uses Gas Pixel Detector as its focal-plane detectors to image the photoelectron tracks and reconstruct their directions. This paper compares several properties of the tracks and identifies the best one to weight each track for improved reconstruction accuracy.

Summary: This paper presents detailed predictions of expected polarization from two magnetars, considering various factors that affect the radiation. The results show that different scenarios result in similar spectral energy distributions but generate significantly different polarization signatures in the 2-8 keV range.

Polarized x-rays from a magnetar

Roberto Taverna et al.

Summary: This study observed polarized X-rays from a magnetar and found that the polarization degree and angle change with energy. The results are consistent with a model in which thermal radiation from the magnetar surface is reprocessed through scattering off charged particles in the magnetosphere.

Determination of X-ray pulsar geometry with IXPE polarimetry

Victor Doroshenko et al.

Summary: Using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, we detected a polarization signal from an accreting neutron star. Both the degree and angle of polarization vary with the pulse phase, and the neutron star's spin axis is misaligned with the angular momentum of the binary orbit.

Summary: The search for astronomical pulsed signals in the radio band involves initial Fourier analysis and time series folding, followed by chi(2) or H-test evaluation to establish significance and shape of the pulse profiles, enhancing sensitivity to low-significance pulsar candidates and aiding in radio frequency interference rejection.

The X-ray evolution and geometry of the 2018 outburst of XTE J1810-197

A. Borghese et al.

Summary: In late 2018, the magnetar XTEJ1810-197 experienced a second recorded X-ray outburst event and became a radio pulsar. During a year-long monitoring campaign, the magnetar exhibited behavior similar to its first outburst, with a significant change in its spin-down rate. Unique to this outburst was the confirmation of an energy-dependent phase shift in the pulse profile.

X-Ray Emission from Isolated Neutron Stars Revisited: 3D Magnetothermal Simulations

Davide De Grandis et al.

Summary: X-ray emission from the surface of isolated neutron stars is influenced by the magnetic field topology and the inhomogeneous distribution of thermal photons. By simulating the coupled magnetic and thermal evolution of the star, self-consistent surface thermal maps can be generated. Different magnetic field configurations result in varying degrees of pulsed fractions, with more complex configurations producing higher pulsed fractions.
